Yeah it's always worth spending an extra few minutes walking if it means your car isn't parked in an obvious place - or looks out of place which can end up in you getting caught.
We could have parked right outside or on the same street there was nothing stopping us but the battered Toyota Camry that belonged to my friend would have looked very conspicuous in an upmarket neighbourhood.

Or you just park in front and do like you are supposed to be in this place.
I have a vehicle that could works quite nice, together with an amber light bar on top I can park almost everywhere and nobody asks me a thing.

And as it's common in the area, place a traffic cone behind your vehicle, even when you parked on a parking lot.

Assuming you do get inside the building, you may want to use that first attempt to see if the building is alarmed. Many abandoned buildings that were recently abandoned have motion sensors, door alarms, cameras, etc. If this is pretty close to you, personally I would simply enter the building (if you find an entrance), look around, try and spot any security devices, and if you see any relatively new sensors, alarms, wiring, etc., I'd leave and watch from a distance to see if anyone shows up. The last thing you want is to enter your first large abandoned building only to have the cops show up because you didn't notice a motion sensor.
