A large chateau in an extreme state of decay, nestled in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere in the Belgian countryside.

Me and a small band of miscreants must have looked quite out of place rocking up before dawn on a cold December morning, if anything the British registration plate on our car was a dead giveaway that we didn't belong. Foreign plates are like shining beacons in rural Europe and residents like to be trigger happy in calling the local police on occasion. We parked up outside the village church, within sight of the front gates of the chateau and tried to get a little bit of sleep whilst we waited for there to be enough light to be able to navigate by.

After half an hour or so we could see enough of the looming spectre of the chateau to make a move, and quickly and quietly myself and two others found our way inside, followed fifteen minutes later by the other two. Once inside I wandered off from the others in search of why I had decided to take these people to what was frankly a ruin and after a bit of searching I found the room. At this stage it was still too dark inside to take decent photos so I just sat in a doorway and watched the sun come up through the windows, watching the light illuminate the ornate sofas and the cavernous hole in the ceiling, which has slowly been growing in size over the last few years.

It went down as one of my favourite explore moments, I was sat in perfect peace on my own with only my thoughts for company. I rejoined the group shortly after and had a bit more of a poke around, but sadly the upper floors are either not there any more or absolutely lethal, so we stayed on the stairs and the ground floor levels...

very nice find!

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

I so hear you. I've been pre-dawning a lot lately and have found myself doing the same waiting for enough light. It is very comforting. I love listening to the raccoons starting to move again, the neighbors' car doors closing as they head out to work....

This is a glorious location. I can only wonder if that empty frame hanging on the wall once held a fabulous original that someone rolled up and stuck down their pant-leg when they left.

Great location! To bad the upper floors are in such bad shape. The elements have not been mind to the ol girl, that's for damn sure. Loving the vines taking over the building in the last picture!
