Longwalk Military Hospital

What better way to celebrate the day of my spiritual home's independence than wandering around a hospital on an RAF site that for the last decade of it's life was home to over 1300 United States Air Force personnel, which closed in 1995 and has been left to rot ever since?

Or at least so I thought. We rocked up and everything along the fence line looked sealed tight, however after an hour of walking around the perimeter, through woods and undergrowth we found what will probably go down as the tightest squeeze I've ever had to get through to gain access to a site and we were in.

I have wanted to see this place for years, it's been on my mental 'to do' list for a long time as I needed to see that enormous corridor for myself - a corridor so long that if you're stood at one end of you can't see the other end. Other than the corridors it's a bit samey but that is always the case with these era military structures, it just took me right back to exploring the school at RAF Upper Heyford, a local site to me which has now sadly all but been demolished and also had a very large USAF presence until 1994. There are a number of other buildings on site that our rumbling stomachs dictated we wouldn't see, so I'd love to go back to finish the place off.

I make no apologies for the level of corridor pornage in this thread.

Damn, seems pretty bad considering closing in 1990. Great set though, that corridor is indeed pretty impressive.

The removal of almost all the windows post closure to be reused elsewhere didn't help in keeping the place intact but the decay is gorgeous in areas. I think it's on record as being one of the longest fully enclosed corridors in the country at one stage of it's life.

Fantastic! I'm a sucker for hallway shots, so naturally I enjoyed this entire series. Great work with the last one especially, I think that's my favourite.

What a cool location! There's something to be appreciated about locations like this - even though almost everything is gone, the decay and what's left is still so appealing, especially combined with the history.

13 is Rockin it, but, 9,10 and 11 are awesomely cool hallways shots. Bet there wasn't 1 fat nurse in this joint. You could lose a pound just making it to the end of the hall on each wing lol

What an amazing place

It was totally worth the three hour drive to see thats for sure!

As an aside, it's one of the very few places I've been where I've felt creeped out, even on a sunny July day. I found myself looking over my shoulder numerous times in the main corridor area, and many other explorers who have been here say the same - as well as hearing unexplained noises and other stuff in various areas.

Great photos! Love the corridor-porn!

It's surprising how graff-free it is, considering it has been abandoned for 25 years!

I found that surprising as well, but it is in a tiny little village in an isolated part of the country so that would make sense. The hospital site is about half the total area of the village!
