Ho. Lee. Shit.

Translated version - https://translate....&edit-text&act=url

Literally the most amazing derelict location I have ever seen. Someone buy me a plane ticket to Kazakhstan please.

For people wondering just what they are - it's the remains of the Soviet Space Shuttle Program, abandoned in 1993 in a hangar in Kazakhstan. And it's the most epic thing I have ever seen.

Interior cabin pics are amazing, about as close as most of us will ever get to seeing the insides of one of these things

I cannot think of many things more epic than this. This find might even be greater than the entire abandoned city of Pripyat and that's saying a lot. For the most part though, I am speechless and feel insignificant... Nonetheless, thank you for finding this epicness and sharing it with all of us!

There's the crazy one, the photographer, and me, the driver, a mix of both. And we're a pretty kickass team if I do say so myself.

It's on /r/all on reddit, front page. Shit. Let the vultures ascend upon it, although I hope it is secure enough to keep looters out.

EDIT: Also, epic find. The pictures are fantastic and I can feel the sheer size of that thing just staring at my laptop screen. Like standing next to a mountain, and you just feel so small.

Those - Ptichka for sure, at least - need to be in a museum sooner than later. The only Buran that actually went to space was destroyed in a hangar collapse over a decade ago.

I don't think there is any immediate danger of that happening. The hangar is located on a live base, where rockets and whatever are launched up to the International Space Station as well as other stuff. Plus it's in Kazakhstan so I can't see them taking too kindly to any funny business over there.

Makes me wonder exactly how access was gained in the first place...

Sadly for us it was a tour. But from what the diggers say: if you are Russian, know who to speak to and don't mind waiting a very long time for the opportunity with no guarantee you'll be taken to this specific part, you can go visit the base too. Quite a few Russian explorers have successfully done it now, this is just the first visit that's been picked up by the western media.

There's a bunch of explorer visits buried in the skanky depths of livejournal, but good luck searching for those. This is the last "popular" visit from 2011.

This epicness been all over media yeah...
I used to live in that part of the world but nowhere close to Baikonur.

Another thing of that scale I can think of is Pyestock, but its fully gone, which is a crime against history=((

Tell me about it. I was lucky enough to explore Pyestock four times back in 2010, and I only ever saw about half of the place. That is one place which should never have been demolished, and would have made a perfect candidate for an industrial/science museum. Instead there is going to be a massive supermarket distribution depot built on the land. So much for history, there will never be another industrial location of such scale, magnitude and importance in these circles ever again.

Pretty awesome, places like these usually have aux. buildings within driving distance (and on top of that railroad junctions). Curiously I am wondering what else is left to rust (in nearby mountain(s)).
