After what seems like far too long, it was great to get back underground recently with my usual draining partner-in-crime inventor77.

After a decidedly rare alignment in our schedules, we decided to make a 2nd attempt at the Toronto drain "Chutes & Ladders", which had eluded us once before. Having previously failed to locate the manhole entrance within a vast wooded park, we aimed for the outfall instead. Under the cover of darkness, and with only a rough idea of where to look, we walked along the river bank for several hundred yards before inventor finally spotted it. Unfortunately a quick investigation revealed the outfall was far too deep and muddy for us to get inside, even with waders. Not wanting to brave the questionable waters of the Don River, we headed back to search for the manhole once again.

The walk to the park was relatively uneventful except for a very strange and surprisingly vast network of wooden fences we found along the way. I didn't capture any good photos of it all, but they were shockingly strong and well built, entirely out of branches and driftwood driven into the ground and woven together. It served no discernible purpose, had nothing inside, yet enclosed a large area spanning from the top of the ravine right down to the river, with several inner "yards", with no way in or out. Just like the York University mystery tunnel, someone spent a LOT of time on this, for no apparent reason whatsoever. #YOLO, I guess?

After a relatively short search for the manhole (last time we gave up after more than hour of bushwhacking), we finally spotted it, mere feet from the main path. Oh well, at least we finally made it.

Fear of an impending rain storm and rusty photo skills kept our visit short and the shots to a minimum, but here are the few I managed. This is a vast system with a large multi-tiered dropshaft which definitely warrants a more thorough explore in more predictable weather. Until then, enjoy these ;D

#1 - here you can see a small section of the wooden "fencing" we discovered. There were several hundred feet of impenetrable shit like this, surround an inner courtyard of....nothing.

#3 - A shot from inside one of two pipes which feed the drop-shaft, this first one being approximately 50-60ft up the ~100ft shaft.

#6 - standing at the base of the dropshaft (yes that's a doorway to the right). It's a small pipe, but holy shit does it kick up a lot of very questionable mist. After failing to capture a few shots near the bottom and I was totally drenched.

#7

#8 - inventor77 doesnt take the stairs

I adore that first photo. They are all good. I enjoy the way the light is manipulated in each photo. but, that first one....suburb!
