Fox Mill & Engine House

Nestled in a small town in the south-west of England lies what was once one of the largest woollen mill complexes in the country. The site was split between the huge main manufacturing/weaving mill and the smaller (but still decent sized) dyehouse situated about half a mile north up the same river. Over the years the dyehouse has come to be known in UK explorer circles as one of the best derelict mills to ever exist, and indeed it still is something special to this day despite having more graffiti and damage in it than it used to.

However, the much larger spectre of the main mill loomed over many explorers who visited the dyehouse - the majority of those who attempted the main mill were rumbled by vigilant security who liked to let his dog run free, CCTV cameras dotted around the site, nosy neighbours and the repurposed buildings on the eastern side of the complex. Recently however, something has changed - either the security contract has ended, or they have made cutbacks, but either way the place is now all quiet. How long it will last like this I don't know so now was the perfect time to capitalise on the lapse in security.

The pair of Autoconers on the top floor of the main mill building are pretty special and it's these which draw a lot of attention from people. However, the engine house is something else entirely. It is, without doubt, the single best room I have stepped foot in anywhere for as long as I can remember. It is a perfect example of pure industrial decay which just happens to house some amazing machinery. I would quite happily travel the nearly three hours cross country just to sit in the engine room whilst my companions explored the rest of the buildings. It's museum-quality machinery and I really hope it isn't scrapped whenever the buildings are converted.

11. The engine room...a bit of a trouser accident might have been had when I pushed the door open.

Afterwards we paid a visit to the dyehouse down the road (my third visit, my companions first). I got a few decent photos so might chuck up a separate post with those in soon.

Thanks for looking!

I was going to try and select a favorite shot– but I couldn't. I love this set!

Holy fuck, dude, this is spectacular! We have a LOT of textile mills in the part of the US that I live in, but I've never seen anything quite as cool as this place. Damn good shots of it, too.
