18th Birthday Trip, Asylum Style (lots of pics)

My birthday isn't until tomorrow, but it will have been prefaced by an awesome trip south this past weekend. All kinds of abandonments interest me (especially larger ones out of state), but a big sprawling mental hospital has always been my "dream location", one that in my younger years, I only got to see in movies like "Session 9" and out the car window. Now that I'm more active, I feel lucky to live not too far from places like this, and extremely grateful to finally explore a couple for myself.

We made the most of our first day, spending about ten hours at a massive hospital in a gorgeous setting. Despite the amount of ground we covered, there's still a lot that we didn't have time to see. Special thanks to KPPC2013 and Punchy (via EsseXploreR) for giving helpful advice!

A few of the pics are a little grainy, but oh well. Enjoy!

Laboratory

Boarded but Bright

Wilted Passage

Shell

Exposed View

Arches

Book of Songs (this one came out way blurry, but I liked the composition)

Balcony Seats

After a few hours in and around the Kirkbride, we had lunch on a roof with a magnificent view:

Color Coded

Library

Sunbathed

And a couple lonely chairs for good measure:

The next day, we hit up another facility, this one partially active. My mother/exploration partner for the trip was uncomfortable with the amount of security there, so I went at this one alone while she walked around the grounds. While searching for a couple specific locations within the campus, I hit a dead end in the tunnels and got totally turned around. After I made my exit and strolled about for a while innocently taking exterior photos, we decided to check out our backup location. Round 2 a couple days later went much more smoothly.

Vines

Six Seater

Rolling Patriot

Wild Things

Lowrider

Left Behind

Happy Place

Draw the Curtain

Maintenance

Waiting Room

Lost in the Maze

I definitely had a fantastic time during this trip, and can't wait to have another go at these beautiful locations.

Beautiful location. I'm seriously going to have to make it up to the Northeast sometime and hit up some of these large places you have.

Every time you read this, I become more powerful.

Great location, great photos. If it were me I'd dial back the saturation just a little bit.

Thank you! These places are both massive and gorgeous, and definitely worth a visit. I wish I could've spent so much more time there than I did.

I appreciate the suggestion; I'm a sucker for vibrant colors, but I'll admit I still have a lot to learn about my camera and what I can do with manual settings to fine-tune certain aspects of my photos.

Kind of a side note, but I brought a hand-drawn map of the first location with me, and lost it in either admin or the morgue. If anyone on here happens to discover it, put it to good use! .

When you were there, did you get any vibes about the presence of like, squatters or other people living in the building? I'm going for the third time tomorrow and the second time I was there I got really nervous in the tunnels, mostly because I'm pretty new and not totally confidant in my ability to gauge the risk level of these situations. This time I'm going with someone 100% new to urban exploring so I've been trying to figure out as much as I can about potential (mostly people related) hazards.

I didn't really get any weird vibes at the second location, or see any evidence of squatters. I didn't cover as much ground as I wanted, but I spent a few hours by myself in the buildings and tunnels and never felt like I wasn't alone. Bringing someone who's brand new to UE, I'd worry more about cops driving around than anyone inside, but of course it never hurts to be cautious.

Man, that's exactly how I felt about seeing these places--all one visit does is make you want to go back!

Thank you very much! And yeah, the one downside to going here was that with the amount of time I had, I almost felt like I was teasing myself .

Thanks! That whole building was fun to photograph, lots of colorful graffiti and neat angles.

Thanks, it was certainly an awesome few days! And yeah, that lab was one of the highlights, lots of neat little machines and gizmos left behind.

Looks like you had a great birthday weekend. I was actually there with a few friends the same day you were at your second location, made a pitstop to take a quick nap there after a long day at another facility starting at 3am.
Ended up briefly speaking with your mother while you were still inside, then later saw the cops speaking with the two of you. Hopefully that went over well ;)

Your mother is your exploring partner - I LOVE IT! When I started this hobby as a young teenager my Grandmother used to take me to my explores. It's an odd way to bond, but it works.

You got to see places I've only dreamed of.. I need to get down there and explore some of these cool places.

That's funny, when we met back up I remember her saying that she had spoken to a couple people who mentioned that the cops there didn't mess around when it came to arresting trespassers. Thankfully, I think what you saw was an amiable exchange . Nice to (extremely indirectly) meet you!

Haha yeah, it is a unique bonding experience, but like you said, it works . As much as I like exploring with friends or alone, I feel lucky to have parents who are willing to do this type of thing with me.

Absolutely . It's wonderful to have an encouraged sense of adventure, especially if the people who you inherited it from are able to come along once in a while.
