If you're involved in the punk scene in LA, those ppl would be able to point you in the direction of trainhoppers. I take it this will be your first time riding freight? That whole scene has kind of gone to shit in the past ~5-10 years I've heard; never rode freight myself but I used to hitchhike a lot and met a lot of train kids through that and the folkpunk world- there's defenitely some cool train hoppers around, but it seems most of them are just drunk assholes (ie Oogles) who aren't really reasonable ppl to travel with if you're not into also being a drunk asshole.

Whoops, forgot to check on this one.

It was a rad experience. Can't wait to do it again. Made it about 600 miles in 4 days. Next time should make it a lot further. Its a pretty awesome adventure for an urbex type.

Currently on mobile. Pictures when I get home.

Looking forward to seeing them. Speaking of which, did you stumble across any abandonments in your travels?

On a side note, train hopping is definitely on my bucket list, when it becomes feasible for me to do so. Someday, maybe.

In Salt Lake City I explored the Ass Factory. I'm sure there are posts about it. Its a 10,000+ sqft squat in downtown.

I'll post some pics of that too.

1. Sunrise.

2. In a yard waiting to pull out.

3. There were no roads in this part of the valley.

4. Northern Utah from a box car.

5. From the "Ass Factory" in downtown SLC. A HUGE squat house.

Awesome photos. I've only done this in Eastern Canada but it was a life changing experience for me, for sure. I'd love to ride the route through California/Arizona.

Damn that looks great. How did you get back? Getting another freight ride?

Also it actually looks pretty spacious/comfortable in that box car!

I flew back.

The box cars are pretty comfy. They are warmer and quieter, but you can usually only see out of one side.
