Hey guys!

What are the worst horror stories involving authorities (security guards, owners and law enforcement) you've gotten yourself into? How big of repercussions have you needed to face? Huge fines, criminal records, imprisonment? And in what context?

I'm keen to start exploring more high profile places, but would be handy knowing just how south can things actually go.

I've been caught on the spot twice myself, once by locals who called the cops (we just kindly stood there and waited for half an hour for them to show up) and once by the cops directly. Luckily enough both of the times the cops eventually let us walk without any consequences.

We have a very similar thread active on Main right now:

But I guess this is just barely different enough that I'll leave it alone...

Dave, didn't you know you should never ever try fucking bees? In the end it just never seems to go well for anyone.

I have read a few horror stories here and I remember reading DJ Craig's around the time he posted that. As for me, a statie entered the building looking for me and called helicopter backup in case i tried to flee. Because he did this, he had to try to justify his rather expensive bad judgement call by throwing the book at me. I went to court to defend myself and the prosecutor advised me that the charges against me could amount to a felony conviction and I should get a lawyer. So I got the lawyer and he got all the crazy shit thrown out and got it back down to misdemeanor trespass but that was not without a courtroom confrontation between the lawyer and the a-hole statie.

I've always maintained the danger in this hobby is NOT from the crackheads, meth labs, hobos, feral animals or toxic waste. Your biggest danger is the cowboy cops.

That's nuts in every conceivable way.

It makes me feel quite lucky to live in a country where it's not a criminal offence, however there are still the rare occasions where the police or security will act like total dicks. I know a few years back a mate of mine and his explorer buddies were caught inside a recently closed animal testing lab complex and had armed police sent in to get them out - to get an armed response here in the UK takes some doing!

Mostly I don't relish these worst-case-scenario stories, because I figure they're rare, and I don't need more reasons not to explore. Better to believe nothing bad can happen to me, than to never leave the house.

But for some reason I was grateful for the opportunity to read your story, DJ Craig. Maybe just because it is such a good story -- dramatic and awful and highly readable. Thanks.

Decided to take pics at Three Mile Island...no closed gates, card readers, barricades, or even a 'keep out' sign (one sign, rather vague warning of video cams monitoring the area and no guns/explosives allowed), so I crossed the bridge and parked conspicuously in the lot. I start snapping pics (I like cooling towers), remaining in my car, and 5 minutes later along comes 2 men in body armor and carrying full auto assault rifles. They were polite, but asked how the hell I got in (as thought I crawled under razor wire, swam a gator infested river, and survived a minefield), and I told them I just crossed a bridge. They had me delete the pics, then took a pic of me holding my DL, and one of me standing by my back license plate. I apologized, told them I was just a tourist, but assured them I wouldn't come back. They understood, and said if I went to the visitors center, I could take pics from across the river as long as I didn't cross the railroad tracks. I got some pics over there that were about as good as the ones I had to delete.
So...moral of the story, DON'T CROSS THE BRIDGE!! I still think there was a flaw in security if there's no access control, and I had 5 minutes of 'free time', yet their first response is heavily armed guards. At the visitors center, I talked to a guy and in ensuring that I wasn't parked in a restricted area this time, he smiled and said, "You crossed the bridge, didn't you?" Well, live and learn...

So what I'm hearing here is that I have four minutes to snap as many pictures as possible and book it out of there. Exploring speed run challenge, anyone?

According to Wikipedia, TMI will be closing next year. Maybe someone will get to explore it properly.

The Federal Police hassled us over going into the telecommunications tunnels.

They produced a 500 page file on us but I'm pretty sure that they only had the one authentic page that someone dropped into the tunnels via a grille & the rest were just blank pages.

When all the post-S11 counter terrorism stuff was going down we had a federal police officer & a NSW Police officer (I'm in a totally different State, Victoria) knock on our door asking for the person who's name was linked to our post office box. Luckily it was in a fake name so as soon as I heard the name I told them he was just a tenant & that he'd moved out.

The post office had just recently insisted that we update our details. Luckily we just used the false name.

All of this will seem alien to newer urbex0rz that would just talk to the feds & sort it out

Doug

Got an $85 trespassing fine/had my car illegally searched by the cop. This wasn't that big of a deal until I was pulled over a year or two later while test driving a convicted felon's Porsche after a repair and held/threatened/questioned and bribed by the cops for almost 20 hours without a phone call or anything.

Apparently the trespassing fine was of huge interest to them because obviously it would be a great idea to build a meth lab or grow-op in the most popular abandonment in the area. Nobody would ever notice that.

Everything turned out okay in the end, but jeez that was stressful. And the cop is unemployed now, for being a total piece of shit in an entirely different manner.

That might be considered harassment of sexual orientation. Tread lightly my friend. Just because we don't understand bee love doesn't make it wrong....

Luckily nothing too exciting for me, just a cop giving me an angry look and saying there's nothing back there and to move along.

He was mostly right, there was nothing there besides long grass, an abandoned warehouse, and a beartrap.

I haven't encountered much cops or security, but I ran into some military police last night.

Turns out its not a good idea to explore an abandonment in between 2 military bases, especially one of which being NORAD.

My friend and I only explore at midnight, we went to this place called the midget house (just a weird for story house made of concrete). We find the place, painstakingly climb up the side since the stairs were demo'd. We get to the top room and start taking pictures then my friend looks towards where we parked and theirs 3 patrol trucks with flashing lights. After that I didn't even think about my safety and basically spiderman crawled down the side of building without my flashlight. And we decided our best move would just to be to approach and make ourselves obviously that we were coming. As we approached the truck, we hear on their Radio "thermals identify 2 males heading your way" before the mp acknowledged
And switched off his radio. I'm over here having a heart attack thinking about going to jail and all that shit. The guy just asked us if we owned the property, did we go in it, did we break anything, what we were doing. We answered honestly and the guy said, "alright since you guys came to us, without us attempting to go in a find ya'll, you can go. Just dont be exploring over here, this isnt a public road. Didn't even ID us or ask us our names (which I thought was a strange, but I wasn'tabout to inquire). I went straight home and changed my underwear.

I wish I could of got more pics of that place

Friend decided he wanted to drive into an abandoned asylum's parking lot. Soon after multiple police cars showed up, listed off over $2000 in fines that he could write us, then told us to have a nice night. Then turned around half way, came back to the window and said that we might wanna remove the illegal license plate film that my friend had on for cameras. Some how got out of that without even having ID's checked.

Were the rifles loaded ;P If I recall correctly the security contractor for TMI got majorly called out a few years ago for all sorts of (actually kinda bad considering what they are guarding) security lapses including the guards being issued rifles but no ammo...

Hey Rustndust, as I recall, parts of the magazines were see-thru and I remember seeing brass...maybe that was a result of them getting busted for those lapses. It was March of 2016 when I'd been there. It still strikes me as funny (in a sad way) that they might half-ass the security upgrade with see-thru mags, but still not invest in a front gate, tho not long ago I looked at a Google maps street view, and it looks like there's a new small, red "No Trespassing" sign.
