I live here and this is the first that I've heard about this. Is that article from the Niagara Gazette or the Buffalo News?

Gazette.

I don't usually have a problem with some good publicity, but this is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the "social whore" generation. It's not good enough to write simply and with credibility, and base your credentials on quality over quantity. It's only deserved if we can make it go viral, spread it out among Britain's top trashy tabloids in an undeserving format, and taunt those who even question it. The girl who was interviewed was excited to be interviewed, and then "annoyed" when they actually used her words of "breaking in" (but not breaking in?) against her.

Her seriousness:

"Changed my fb name so the feds cant find me. Lmfao"

That'll work.

I mean....

I like the last Q/A but honestly. They name locations. And that's something I'm 100% against because you never know what vagrant/asshole/troll/whathaveyou will break in there too and fuck shit up. They even named the POE. And it's breaking-in, no matter how you got into the place. Climbing in through a window is still breaking and entering.

Any UE publicity is bad publicity.

Take it from my personal experience in reading a discovery file in which an SPD detective specifically references several newspaper/radio talks in which explorers gloat about "we do this all the time" and "we will keep trying until we get in". The sweetness of fame never outlasts the bitterness of losing a court case with a shitty plea deal.

Umm no..? How could you B&E without breaking? If you climb in from a window (without destroying it) you're merely entering. So on legal terms it would be just trespassing rather than B&E, which is also known as burglary.

Breaking and entering isn't always the same as burglary...lol. There has to be intent to commit a crime for a burglary charge. And in some states, if you enter through a window, it is considered breaking and entering, not just trespassing and not burglary if it was already open. You can't be charged with burglary if you didnt take anything, didnt plan to take anything or didnt cause any damage. You can get charged with conspiracy to commit burglary or attempted if the police think you are there attempting to steal something from the residence/place. But most of the time if you entered through a door or window that was already open, you'll just get a trespassing arrest or summons if youre there just taking photos. Unless the cop really wants to push the charges.

It depends. If i do an article on a place i did with permission, it isnt the same as me doing it if i broke in and naming it. Showing everybody that you can go there and where it is. I do agree with you tho that most of it is bad.

I don't get the argument when people say they go into abandonments to "document them for history."

Seems like the history of a building that matters is the time when it was in use - who was there, for what, etc.

Like in the future, if someone ever researches the mental health system, they will look to the history of Kirkbrides for when they were in use, not when they sat disused and vandalized.

So documenting an abandonment for history - who's history, other explorers or photographers?

I can only speak for myself but I like to have documentation of the different types of architecture that are quickly being erased in my county. And in a case like Greystone Psych near me, it's nice to have pictures to show what a terrible thing the state of NJ did by letting that building sit vacant for so long. I hope one day someone can look at my photos and feel the same outrage over the abuse of such a historic building as I do right now.

OK, I'm trying not to hijack this thread, but I just wanted to confirm that this is most definitely NOT correct. Breaking and entering is a completely distinct thing from trespassing almost anywhere you go. I have heard rumors that there are some rare regional exceptions to this (Massachusetts) but I have been unable to verify this, and honestly, even if it's true... I highly doubt it's actually enforced that way in practice.

In general, you should continue to work on the assumption that trespassing and B&E, legally speaking, are two completely different things.

OK, back to the OP's topic...

Honestly, this. I feel as long as a place is standing there's still history and architecture - or at the very least a dumb fascination - to be documented... and in some cases potentially brought to the attention of those who might have the power/ability to preserve it.

Yeah, they sound young and stupid, they needed a "sponsor" to get from Cleveland to NF?? And why's she talking about the feds getting her? Pretty sure any charges relating to this would be state charges...

I agree with the "any publicity is bad publicity" sentiment, partially because of my greed, and also partially because it results in increased awareness to law enforcement, but more importantly, vandals.

That isnt always true. Places done with permission are not always bad publicity. Sometimes publicity can also save a place. It all depends on who and what kind of people make it famous and to who sees it. Look at the giant theater in Brooklyn. Publicity saved it and it is now almost completely renovated.

Please tell me that I wasn't the only person thinking that this was somehow Seph-related?

I do feel like publicity can be good or bad depending on what the focus is. If UE is getting publicity, that's not good, but as some people said earlier, if an abandoned building is getting publicity, that can either be good or bad.
