I'm flabbergasted as to how he could have pulled that off. And how did he get the damn things down without falling to his death or dropping them? Crazy...

Thinking about this a little more, I'm thinking there's gotta be a ladder (whether external or internal) or something to give maintenance workers access to the lights. Apparently, the guy did this once before, so he probably already knew the way up.

Sometimes I envy the courage of crazy people.

OMG, this guy is my new hero. What balls, what a nut! I'm amazed he didn't break it on the way down. Fucking bridge security though. All this overreaction around public infrastructure and terrorists and all the crap that is eroding our rights in the US and making infiltration that much riskier, and these people ignore the alarm, only to find out 4 days later, duh, the lights are missing. Fucking ridiculous. "Bridge Security" should be charged with a crime for failing in their precious duty to protect the bridge.

No more photos from the top of that bridge I guess. Bummer. ahahahaahaahaahaahaah~!!!!!!!

OMG, this guy is my new hero.

Imagine this scenario.

Guy breaks and enters bridge tower. Climbs up. Steals light. Leaves with light.

Later that night, plane flies into bridge tower. Everyone in plane dead. Debris from plane lands on vehicles/people below, killing them too.

The above is what could have easily happened. Supposing that had actually happened, would you still consider him a hero?

I mean, sure, impressive feat, but for what? It's akin to stealing stop signs at 2am - people can die.

Ooooh, I just can't resist it. He's my hero for pure ballsy, nutter maneuvers. Not the stealing part. I often get so wrapped up in fantasy paranoid delusions about the level of security on active bridges, meanwhile this guy is just waltzing up there and then lugging down a massive fragile object, most likely taking hours and hours to pull off and risking much high consequences than me creeping around on bridges with a camera.

Downtown Boston, 270' off the ground, that beacon isn't going to be the one thing that causes a plane to crash into this particular bridge. It's downtown fucking Boston man! Who's flying at 270', 1/4 mile from skyscrapers in such heavy weather that they can't see the bridge because the entire bridge and beacon are obscured in fog or cloud cover, oh wait, that would negate the usefulness of a beacon now wouldn't it? If they happen to miss the bridge in this ridiculous scenario then they would hit buildings in about 13 seconds because they are such incompetent pilots to be flying around for fun in this kind of weather. It's a metropolitan city, there is ATC and flight regulations, and lights fucking everywhere.

Come off it. There's been a broken beacon on a 1.7 mile long bridge near me on one of two towers at approximately the same height, for months. I was on the top of a 500' bridge during construction when they turned the lights off for two nights 1/2 mile from downtown San Francisco. The old San Francisco bay bridge being demolished right next to it happened to have a broken beacon on a 375' tower not that long ago, off for weeks...

Incompetent bridge security is the reason this beacon wasn't resolved significantly faster than 4 days later when they figured it out.

Fantasy paranoid delusions? It's a bridge, man. A bridge. It's not Area 51.
And yeah, again, I already said it was an impressive feat. But then again, he's homeless. It's not like he had to get up at 5:30am to go work an 8 hour shift the next day. Too much free time can lead to stealing bridge lights and other dangerous behaviour.

Obviously there's a precedent for aircraft colliding with city infrastructure, or else you'd be correct, lights on the bridge would be redundant. But they're not.
And not even that, but supposing an "incompetent" pilot flew into a bridge with no lighting. The pilot (or his loved ones) could sue the city for not having proper lighting. Ridiculous, yes, but if the bridge has lighting the city can't (as easily) be sued.

Come off it. There's been a broken beacon on a 1.7 mile long bridge near me on one of two towers at approximately the same height, for months. I was on the top of a 500' bridge during construction when they turned the lights off for two nights 1/2 mile from downtown San Francisco. Okay, and did you bother to report the broken light (from a payphone if you like) to the city? I mean, public apathy is a bit of a social disease. I consider it to be on par with a burnt out traffic light - it's dangerous, and like my stop sign stealing example in my previous post, people can die.

And for what it's worth, going on high bridges without proper fall arrest gear can get you killed. I'm not trying to bust your balls here, just pointing it out.

Incompetent bridge security is the reason this beacon wasn't resolved significantly faster than 4 days later when they figured it out.

As a former security guard with roughly a decade and a half experience behind me, I can relate to how frustrating it can be when security doesn't seem to be pulling its weight. Not to justify, but the typical static security guard doesn't get paid adequately and the "industry" as a whole is viewed a bit as a "lazy man's job".
But yes, if security had been on the ball this episode probably wouldn't have gone as far as it did. However, that was not the case here.

All this is just my thoughts on the matter. Again, it's one thing to enter an abandoned building and wander around and snap pictures, but when people do things than can get others killed I tend not to "give them props", you could say.
