Sobaire,
Nicely handled. My technique of choice is to walk up to the "heat" with my camera in hand, a smile, and a friendly attitude. It has always gotten me out of a jam.
There's a guy south of town who owns one of the old mines. He's a cantankerous old coot with huge No Trespassing signs all over his property. I was hoping to take a look around but as I rolled up on the mine site, out he came. I parked my truck, got out, and slowly walked up to him. After the expected, "This is all private property. You have to turn around and leave." we ended up talking for close to two hours. I found out the story of the mine, what he did for a living, and what kind of guns he likes.
I left with an invitation to visit his property any time I wanted whether he was there or not.
Sometimes it's beneficial to be nice to folks.
