My first run-in with the local wildlife

Mine happened yesterday. RosyCheeks and I were exploring this old Victorian style house on our way to the main destination (a mill). We parked across the street and walked over to the once driveway. Immediately, we noticed beer cans and footprints in the snow leading to the house. Though, with our expert tracking skills *cough* we determined that the footprints lead to the house, and then lead away again, as though they had entered and since left. We crept up to the house, not expecting to get in, as it was solidly boarded up. To our surprise, there was ... our POE. We entered the house and immediately saw splatters of varnish everywhere, one splash in particular spelled out "fuck god". Chalking it up to the partygoers that had left the beer cans, we delved into the house. We walked out of the entry room, and found the stairs. Not-so-quietly, we creeped up them, when all of the sudden, my phone starts vibrating. Unknown number. I pick it up, and for a moment there is silence.

"Hello?" I say shakily,
"Hi! Jack? Are you doing that exploration stuff?"
"Yeah, grandma, we are actually in a house right now."
It was at that point we heard movement in the house.
"Just make sure you pick up the dog later, okay"
"Yeah" I said, hushed, "ok, bye" and I hung up.
The noise persisted, however. Slow, deliberate movement, like someone awakening from a -20 degrees celcius slumber. RosyCheeks looked at me and asked: "What should we do?"
"Leave."
And so we hurried out of the house and ran off. I was not about to find out who was slumbering in that house, especially not with just two of us. We agreed to come back further. While we both said it was probably nothing, we both knew in the back of our minds that was not true.

I don't know if curiosity or fear drove us back to that place, but at night (we previously went that afternoon) we came back. Immediately, we noticed more tracks than we had left. Coming and going from entrances we had not used. I went up to the POE and shone my light in. Our friends were restless, claiming they saw a silhouette in one of the upper windows. I called out into the house.
"Hello?" Louder "Anyone home?"
After a moment of silence, and being terrified of what they might sound like, fear/intelligence bested our curiosity, and we left. One day we will go back to that house, but for now, we will stick to other places. I've only been doing this for like 3 weeks and already I've experienced something like this - and I love it.

(Please don't reveal POEs in the public forum, thanks. -Ganesha)

Yeah reminds me of a story. After exploring an old warehouse we were walking around its perimeter and saw a weird looking shack tucked over by some woods. Well, being explorers, we decided to check it out. Upon opening the door we immediately knew it very well might have been a mistake. We walked right into a squatters house. Saw some prescription pills, sleeping material, books, knives, etc. We snapped some pictures then left ASAP. The guy very well may have been a chill dude, but there's also the chance that its some strung out junkie looking to rob someone. Anyways, I'd give it some time and check it out again. Bring a pocket knife just in case shit hit the fan.. If you want to check out some of the pictures lemme know.

I never used to take a flashlight exploring so I had to put the camera down the hall and look at the picture to see if there was a floor or not. One time I was exploring this old Insect Removal place when I got this photo:

Keep in mind is was pitch black - no light at all.

Suffice to say I got the hell out of dodge.

Oh hell no, that's way too horror game for me! I dislike the uh, smear of wet under the tent like it was wet inside and leaked from there.

Good instincts.

I was exploring the ammo dump of March AFB. I'm going into one of the office buildings at the entrance. Standing in the doorway, looking around, I heard a rat scurrying in the ceiling. There was a hole in the ceiling at the end of the small room. A barn owl dropped from the hole in the ceiling, opened it's wings and flew right at me. I barely ducked in time; feeling the feathers and wind go past my head. It all happened within 1 second. After shaking off the shock, I realized the owl was scared and just trying to get out of the room and I was standing in the doorway. I don't stand in the middle of doorways anymore since that happened. I stand by the side of the door after doing a quick walk by the door.

I have yet to run into another human being while inside a building, but on a recent trip me and my buddy ran into several forms of wildlife.

First incident:
We were on either the second or third floor of a hotel. Heading towards the end of a dead end hallway, rooms on both sides. All of a sudden we hear a very loud BANG BANG BANG, then nothing. We both froze in place, "What the fuck was that??" my friend says. We are on the third floor, can't be someone trying to get in....maybe the wind? I say. We then realize it was not that windy out. A bit spooked we continue on. As I walk into one of the rooms I hear the noise again. Scared the shit out of me until I realize it was just a bird trapped inside, smashing itself against the window in a desperate attempt to escape. We both tried prying windows open as the bird flew between three separate rooms, via holes in the walls. After 5 minutes of so of following the bird and trying windows I was finally able to get one open and with more than a little coaxing the bird managed to escape to freedom, albeit a bit stunned. No idea how the poor thing did not break it's neck.

Second incident:
We had just entered the basement of the same building. This place was know for spas and salt baths, this meant many small rooms in the basement. I was standing in the hallway taking a picture of one of these rooms when I feel something to the left of me. At first I though it was the floor next to me shifting. Then I look down and there is a damn groundhog running past me into the room I am photographing. I yell something to the effect of "Holy shit dude there is a fucking groundhog down here!!!" Once again a bit shaken up, we continue on.
About five minutes later my buddy is inside a room and I am standing in the hall by the doorway. Both are pitch black except our flashlights. I hear something down the hall and shine my light in that direction. It's the damn groundhog again!! This time it charges directly at me! I jump out of the way and it charges again, except this time it goes straight into the room my buddy is in. Next thing I hear is "My fucking light died!!! Where is it?? Where is it??" I hear my friend frantically trying to exit a now completely pitch black room and the sound of small, angry feet scrambling around on the floor. He comes flying out of the room with the groundhog in hot pursuit. At this point the feisty little bastard is making terrifying high pitch screeching noises. We decide it's time we exit the basement and we do so, with haste.

The next day, at a different location:
After exploring the first of several buildings we head towards a small building directly behind it. About 30 feet from a wide open entry way I spot something moving. After the whole groundhog incident the previous day we stopped and inched forward slowly. Lucky thing we did! As we got a few feet closer I saw the tail and back of a skunk. We decided that building was NOT worth it.

On the way out of the complex we noticed a large beehive by the door of the first building we had explored. We had tried to use this door to exit from inside earlier only to find it sealed, lucky again!

Oh and we both got ticks from one of the locations we explored, not sure which. As much as I love rural type exploration it does have it's downsides.

catdog23 holy fucking shit I would have peed myself if I had been you, that's like right out of a horror movie. I'm so glad you didn't run into any body.

Theswanstation, I know the ground hog thing was scary at the time but I started cracking up reading about it charging your friend in the dark room. I guess it's pissed that it didn't see its shadow? Haha!

As for my own story... PERSON RELATED, I had a few that weren't bothersome but one scare I had that ended up being nothing was the time I was exploring this abandoned inn in the middle of the desert with a buddy of mine. It wasn't a high threat place and it was out in the open so we decided if anyone gives us trouble we're just a couple of tourists who were nosey or whatever. So we're onto the 3rd story when I heard a distinct phone noise like someone got a text.I found it odd since I have my phone on vibrate due to being deaf in my left ear and yadda yadda so I looked at my friend who was all "it wasn't me." We quietly searched the place instead of fleeing (I'm a trained kickboxer) and found nothing, so we decided we must be hearing things. Unless there was a ghost. In that case, we need to call Ghostbusters.

A NON PERSON RELATED THREAT I have...one time I was exploring this old house with my younger sister and we discovered that, once we got more into the house, one wall was completely turned into a bee hive. The whole fucking wall. We left after realizing there were swarms of bees around us. Another time I was with my now ex friend and roommate and 2 of her friends exploring this old restaurant like place and after roaming around it with our flashlight and being lightly grossed out from all the cobwebs we came across a room (I shit you not) filled with black widows. We got out of there faster than Usain Bolt on crack.

Oh we laughed about it once we left the building, but he was very freaked out at the time. I am still amazed at the timing. His light was working up until the moment the groundhog charged into the room he was in. It died right then and did not work the rest of the trip, even with new batteries. It's a LED Maglite to!

Luckily we do not have Black Widows, or really any poisonous spiders here in NY. But I do fear running into a large bees nest.

That is pretty funny! Maybe the groundhog was secretly satan and fucked up your light when it charged at you? Jk but that makes for a great story. Honestly, if I had been your friend I probably would have screamed like a little girl and kicked the fucker hard by accident.

Good, I wouldn't wish that upon anyone. Spiders are one thing, poisonous ones are another. I've also come across hobo spiders, brown recluses, brown widows...the bees can be scary but not a huge threat as long as you don't piss off the hive. Wasps I'd be more afraid of, and hornets.

I was checking out a spot out past Fort Sumner in ranch land.

As I was getting near the doorway of the ruin, in which the 2nd story collapsed onto the first some time ago, I spooked a group of rattlesnakes and even saw slither over some of the debris.
I jumped back like I was some sort of spring and made sure there were no shady spots or heavy shrubbery around.

As long as I've lived in the southwestern states, I've never heard an actual rattler up close until that point.
Along with the venom, just that specific rattling alone has got to be one of the most, bone chilling sounds I've ever heard.

Oh I almost kicked the thing a few times when he was charging at my feet. He looked even more demonic because one of his rear legs was messed up so he ran weird. He was certainly not pleased with us being there, but I suppose I would not be to happy if people invaded my home like that either!

I was just on a trip out that way, hit a bunch of towns along Route 60 west of Sumner (as well as the Taiban Presbyterian church). Was just waiting to run into a rattler, scorpion or some other type of creature that thrives in inhospitable places like the desert. Worst thing I ran into though were biting gnats...
