Fellow MSP explorer here, looks like a good location. Reminds me of a drain we just explored down by the Mississippi. After walking 2+ miles we called in quits and exited through a manhole. Popped up right in the middle of an intersection with a few cars waiting at a red light...if only I could have seen their reaction.

You should be extremely careful about popping up through manholes for exactly this reason. It can be very dangerous. You could easily get killed doing that. If you don't specifically know where a manhole is going to come out, then you generally should not pop it.

Yeah luckily for us it was close to midnight, but I definitely see the potential risks.

You are doing just fine. As I don't own this site or this town, I won't suggest that you alter your behavior.

Everyone starts somewhere, excellent decision. You probably waited until everything was "quiet", so you were obviously safe.

If a car is traveling at 50 miles per hour, how many feet per second is the car traveling?

Hmmm. Let's see if I still remember my math. According to my scratch sheet, about 73 ft/s. And yeah, believe me, we aren't total airheads. We didn't hear any commotion above us so we made the quick escape. Suburban St. Paul ain't exactly busy at midnight on a weekday.

Also, M and SP are both popular cycling towns. Many of the cyclists are doing around 20mph, and are more commonly on streets than sidewalks.

Learned this the hard way myself a while back. A buddy and I were going down this storm drain in my hometown and I lifted a cover to get my bearings just as a pair of headlights came rushing up. I got out of the way in time, but the dude ran over the cover and probably fucked something up for the commotion it made.

We opted to call it an early night and vamoosed. Next time, I'll just hold my phone up the ladder and use the GPS if I'm so damn curious...

Okay, next June.

I run out of dissertation funding and won't be done writing until June 2017. So, I need free rent for a year. Thanks Mom! Sigh...

Speaking of up stream, Herm, if you go up stream next time, your pants won't get wet and you'll see all the graffiti you could ever want, and then a bunch more.

Red, was this the one we were in for opening last year? I don't remember a less-wet cooler-graffiti section, but if so I'll make it a priority next time I'm up in MSP. Love me some fine underground artwork!

If by last year you mean January of 2015 then yes. If you mean January 2014 then...I still think yes? Man, alcohol does NOT lend it's self to location retention! The deepish water at the usual entrance quickly subsides to an inch deep or less as you go up stream. If you go down stream like Herm did, it will eventually go over your head right before you are in the river proper.

As for the graffiti, I don't think there is a square foot of wall space left that doesn't have something painted on it. In the RCP sections, that's awesome. In the beautiful old brick area, it makes me a little stabby. My guess is that you didn't notice all the paint due to the a fore mentioned quantities of alcohol. ;) And when I say "cooler" I admit I'm probably biased by my deep love of TCB and Wundr's work, of which there are several examples in this location.

there's some upstream lids you can also get into and avoid all the water.
