A School Trip

2015 is rapidly turning into the year of the derelict school for me. I'm only two months in and already done 5 (including one twice!).

Here are some photos from the latest pair visited yesterday, me and my mate had a couple of fails at other sites and purely by chance and luck the two sites we managed to get into were both schools.

This first school was opened in the 1970s as a school for children with special needs and learning difficulties who required one-to-one care and catered for a very small number of students at one time (around 20), it closed in 2006 and has sat vacant ever since. It's a bit empty and dark thanks to the majority of the windows being boarded over but it did contain a rather nice surprise.

The second school was a lot bigger and more interesting. Built and opened in 1912 it operated as a small-ish Primary school but was extended massively during the 1960s which doubled the size of the school and included a new gymnasium and class blocks as well as a new block built suspended on stilts above one of the original 1912 buildings and accessible from the central playground via a pair of semi-enclosed staircases which is very unusual indeed. It closed in 1990 and after closure was taken over by a local college who used it as their Creative Arts & Design campus, this too closed in 2011.

Very nice photos. That's pretty cool that there are so many old schools close to you.

I love that the art is still hanging on the walls! And the exterior shot of the second school is awesome. I'm totally jealous - my area is so packed with kids I'd never be able to find a school to explore.

Old schools are actually really easy to get into, typically the lock systems on the doors are both bad and worn down from kids beating the crap out of them.

Usually if the door has a bit of give to it you can open it (locked or not) by yanking on the handle really hard and fast a few times.
