This is a repost, I posted this originally in the Rookie forum, realized the error of my ways, and am now posting these pictures where they belong: in the PNW.

Full album of 61 photos: http://imgur.com/a/cdurj
I apologize for the quality, at the time all I had was a broken camera that refused to focus unless it flashed.

These photos are about 5 years old. I waited a long time to post them anywhere, and I was also unaware of any sort of community that had the curiosities I do. This location is 90% burned to the ground - there is one wing of hotel rooms left. These photos were before the arson (because every local knows it was arson, and not an "an accident." If you are curious about POE (because the POE is gone now, with the fire) feel free to PM me, it's actually an interesting story.

1. I took this photo because me and my boyfriend at the time had already attempted to break into this hotel once. When we did, we heard what we thought were alarms, and booked it, but we left behind these two cans. When we returned about 2 weeks later, at the time these photos were taken, the cans were still there. Also the noise we actually heard was batteries dying in smoke detectors.

2. This is.. what I think was the restaurant area of the hotel? Those windows on the left lead out to the sun deck, pools, and river.

3. This is one of my 4 or 5 pictures of "the lonely chair." Creepy lil' buggers. But the main reason I took this picture was because we found evidence of a paintball match on the door frame.

4. "The Quiet Bar" - the sign is really beautiful, there is a picture in the full album. It had a full scenic view of the deck and pool area. It was the most peaceful place in the whole hotel, and relatively untouched.

5. We found roof access! More pictures of the roof, and views from the roof, in the album.

6. This was one of the ballrooms. The electricity didn't work, and in reality I could barely see further than that chair. The flash only helped for a second. You still can't see the other side of the room, and I never walked over there. The darkness was too.. engulfing, I guess you could say. The only light source was from the door we came through (as we neglected to bring flashlights).

7. Someone dragged these mattresses down from the rooms and had stacked them up next to the staircase. For you know, jumping purposes. My brothers thought it was a pretty good idea.

8. The pool on the sun deck. It's pretty nasty.

9. This is a picture I have to explain because it just doesn't make sense otherwise. In the center of the picture, there is a blurry brown blob. That's a spider. I really wanted a picture of that spider.

Nice. Last time I was there (2009?) a cool old WWII ship (The LCI 713 - see http://www.amphibi...ge/lci713page.html) was moored up outside. I wonder if it's still there? Next mission: getting on that boat.

No it doesn't look like it there anymore, or at least most of it. Jenny said most of it burned down. I wonder, though, if there is anything left worth exploring?

Yeah so I don't think the ship is moored there anymore because, well, the dock was directly connected to the hotel. That part of the hotel is completely gone. Since there is nowhere to connect the dock, I'm pretty sure it's not there anymore BUT I can confirm on my way home from work in the morning, since I drive on that bridge everyday. Hopefully I won't forget.

There is one wing of hotel rooms left, but it's literally just a wing full of hotel rooms. I haven't looked into exploring that last area (because I know there are security cameras and stuff all around there with 100% visibility to this hotel).

If I'm not mistaken I did see a video posted on Youtube of the actual fire posted by someone who was driving over the bridge into Portland. The Hotel was abandoned at the time, and the video was from a few years back. I would post a link to the video if I could find it again.

I'm sure if you just Google "Thunderbird fire" it'll pop right up. It does not surprise me there is a video, the fire was all over the local news. It was a big deal at the time.

Wow! Those photos are phenomenal! Very interesting looking through them. What a bummer it all burnt down.. Especially before I could go and see it first hand.

That's awesome that you got some pictures from before the fire. I loved that place, but hadn't really started photographing anything at the point it burned down. By coincidence, I was riding my bike up to the Couve to meet my dad on the morning after it burned. The island had ash floating all over and the smoke was still pretty thick, which sucked on a bike. I saw that it was the hotel on my way back across and was super bummed. It was a beautiful building.

I thought my favorite part of this post was the "Mattresses for jumping purposes" but then I was introduced to blurry spider. I think this perfectly captures the frustration of not having a manually focusing camera. Curse you impossible close ups!

Jenny, it looks like we were there during the same summer. That roof was great to kick back on, watch the jets overhead and cars zip past on the bridge. And the smoke detectors always do that, they sense you nearby and with the last few amps they scream "Feed me!"

That's cool! Yeah it was my first explore ever so we thought the dying battery was actually an alarm.. Now I know!

Roof access is definitely my favorite. Always makes me feel strangely calm, as I watch the world move around me and I'm standing still.

One of the wings is still there; however, its got a fence up and has some sort of security on site at night. I've been told that building is "salvageable" and is why contractors are on site during the day.

Back when the whole place was still around, I knew some of the security guys and gals that did patrols of the place. The owner had an idea to return the place to its glory but the issue holding it up was the fact the plumbing in the complex needed substantial repairs that made further investment hard; however I guess a few weeks before the fire as I hear, there was rumor they found a solution to fix the plumbing and were in the process of getting permits to move forward.

Also fun fact: During filing of the Goonies in Astoria, the whole cast had their base hotel at the Thunderbird and they would be driven up to Astoria daily from Portland.
