Mansfield General Hospital < on 2/19/2015 5:09 PM > | Reply with Quote
Stuck in the middle of a slightly depressing town in the North-Midlands of the UK sat a hospital many people's UE dreams were made of. And when I say 'stuck in the middle' I mean, literally, the middle - the hospital was surrounded on all sides by houses or businesses with zero avenues of entry possible that weren't ludicrously public.
Those who faced up to the fact that you would be climbing a fence which would leave you at eye-level with the neighbouring houses bedrooms and no more than a few feet from their windows knew the likelihood of the police getting called out was high, as had happened so many times in the past. That coupled with a security guard who wasn't stationed on site but - no joke - lived in the house directly opposite the main approach to the buildings made it a rather interesting nut to crack.
My trip, taken a few years back, was no different. It involved many dodgy fence climbs, evading both the police and security who turned up looking for us inside the buildings, and as was the customary leaving present given to many others who explored here found a parking ticket on our car when we got back to it.
The first hospital building was completed and opened in the early 1900s and only had a handful of beds. However over time it grew, and in 1950 was extended massively with a huge general hospital block added to land behind the first building. It closed in stages up until the A&E vacated on September 13th 1992 when services were transferred elsewhere, and sat derelict for 21 years before being demolished in late 2013.
This was, in my opinion, the best derelict general hospital the UK ever had.

Posted by IndoAnomaly Great set. I really like the wonky chairs that are tilted back. Lots of furniture still left about surprisingly.
I can't remember the technical name for those chairs but they were used to calm thrashing/violent patients down and were banned in the mid 1990s from what I can remember being told a while back.
