Houston Regular Meet-and-Greet

Howdy everybody, I just got back from a wonderful weekend of adventure with Astro, IndoAnomaly, Kville, Sunwulf, and Moonicorn (It was awesome to meet all of you that I didn't know already!). While we were out I suggested the idea that it might be nice to have a regular meet-and-greet, to let all of the explorers in the area both new and veteran, young and old, get together in a low-impact environment.

I found out really quickly in Dallas that the regular meet-and-greet they have serves really well as a way to get to know other folks who are into UE, helps newer folks (like me at the time) get up to speed safely, and probably most interestingly for me serves as a sort of home-base for people to plan local stuff.

I can assume that Astro would prefer not to have to plan the stuff in our area all the time, so I figured I'd take the initiative on this one. So before I make this post super long for no reason, and before I get all psyched about the idea, I figured I'd run a poll to see how many people would be interested in such a thing. If there is enough interest we can work out dates, how often it might meet, etc. I'm thinking we might follow the DFW model, where the group meets at a restaurant or something similar once a month or once every other month.

So, what do you guys say? Wanna make this a thing?

(ETA: I went ahead and voted yes, just to figure out this poll thing. Plus, surprisingly, I will indeed be going.)

Big fan of this idea, and I'm absolutely interested. It would certainly help me getting up to speed and meeting others in the community.

We did them in Tulsa, and only a few of us usually showed up, but it was a great way to meet a few newer people. I like them, because we get to put actual faces to the names, and get to become a closer net group.

Wow, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that would be interested in seeing this happen. Looks like we have a reasonable number of yes votes, so I guess it's time to get this thing moving. Now, the last thing I'll ask before we get the event made is what would be the easiest way to set this up for you guys.

My initial idea (when I talked to A through Z about it forever ago, only now have I gotten up the energy to just do it) was basically to copy the DFW setup, where they meet once a month or once every other month at a restaurant, then if anyone at the meeting wants to explore a location or whatever, they can get that organized there. It worked really well, and I was able to see a lot of neat locations because of those meetings. I'm going to go ahead and suggest the last Friday of every month starting sometime between six and eight, just to give us something to discuss.

So let me know whether or not you are for that idea, any suggestions or things you might need to work around (within reason). Thanks for all the input, I'll try and answer individual stuff soon, but right now I gotta run!

TL;DR: Let me know if you're up for the last Friday of every month at about seven or so at restaurants, and if not what you think would work better.

I guess ill put in some input on this. Weekend mornings are usually your best bet. Ive hosted and attended many meetups that either were an all weekend thing, or met up first thing in the morning. Whenever ive attended any meetups when living in the northeast years and years ago when they actually happened, they happened Sat or Sun morning at like 10 at IHOP,Dennys, etc. If you host something at 7pm at a restaurant, it doesnt leave much time for exploring after if people do decide to go. If you take pictures, ideally, night time isnt your best option, which is why meeting at 7pm wouldnt make much sense, unless its just for dinner. Unless the place you are trying to get into has too much activity during the day and you have to go at night. Now if you met up at say 9am on a Saturday or Sunday, that leaves most of the day with plenty to do. Also, Sundays are more of your quieter days since a lot of places are closed.

Rinzler: Yeah, I'd agree that weekend mornings are best for meetups that involve a lot of locations and the emphasis is on photography.

The emphasis here is more on letting folks get to know each other in person, as Ghostofthelens mentioned. The actual exploration, while totally a thing that I want to see, is probably something that people will decide to do afterward (or figure out plans for at the meet and greet).

What I'm thinking of is more akin to a 2600 meeting, for those who are familiar with that.

Ah ok. I wasnt sure what you were getting at, which is why i suggested the early AM meet so there could be some exploring right from the restaurant, but i understand what you are getting at now.

Hello, I wanted to chime in and say I am all about this idea. I am new to UER, but I've been exploring places for years, and never knew there was an entire society that lives the same way I do. I am eager to help out in any way I can, and even more excited to meet others who do it as well. I personally think weekends are good days to meet up, but I would say a good time would be like mid day around noon or so. Let me know if there is anything I can help with.

Ripper: Howdy there, welcome to the forums! It does sound like there's enough support, so I'm pretty much ready to see this thing happen.

I'm going to go ahead and make an executive decision on this, and say let's go for last Friday of every month at seven, give or take an hour. That will give us a few weeks for anyone with an issue to come in and voice their piece. I'm also thinking that Frank's Pizza downtown is as good as any a place to kick things off. The parking meters downtown cut off at six, so street parking will be free by the time we get there.

Anyone agree? Disagree? I'll leave the ideas on the table there for a few days and then start up an event if this seems doable for folks.

I've never been to Frank's pizza, so I'm excited to try that. Also, I'm always down with free parking in Houston. Last Friday works for me and gives me ample time to request off work.

Friday's at 7...too...stuff our pie-holes with pizza? Or to explore?

I skimmed...sorry, hahaha. I'm at work. I also have no idea where that restaurant is or ever heard of it. :/ So, be sure to post an address or something.

Yeah, Tiffers, the idea at the moment is to have a monthly low-intensity get-together to kind of build the local community and get to know each other. In this case by eating pizza (or other foods. I don't judge). And there'll be more than pizza, I think there's a bar there, too, but I wouldn't count on an impressive selection. As far as I can tell, they won't ask for IDs unless somebody wants a beer or something, so there's a little something for everybody.

Again, this is all default stuff, if anyone thinks there is a better option out there we can discuss that, too. In any case, when I post the event I'll for sure put down addresses, times, and dates either in this thread or on the event. Or both.

Another thing about meeting up say at 7 and not having the actual 'exploring' part of the event is that not everybody lives in Houston. Said person would have to travel to Houston again the following day and probably will have less of a crowd be willing to go back into Houston again the following day.
