Since this is an urban exploration forum, and rooftopping counts, (I guess), what are your thoughts on it? Stories, experiences, current attitude towards it?

Recently I've seen lots of hate going towards rooftopping or rooftoppers in general, or people renouncing it for various reasons. I'm newer to this sort of thing, and I enjoy rooftopping but my perspective is somewhat limited. From what I can see it's still going relatively strong, especially in its original locations such as Russia, Hong Kong, UK, etc. I'm not sure how much of a foothold it has retained in the U.S., but hey, less crowded rooftops, right?

I'm just asking your thoughts and I'm interested to where it stands now, among you, and what experiences or opinions you have to share. So...

rooftopping?

It definitely counts! Here's a very, very, very long thread with lots of rooftop porn:

It's not everyone's thing. Personally it's not my favorite - it always just seems a little anticlimactic to me. But there are plenty of explorers out there who do rooftops all the time, and do some incredible photography!

I wouldn't say that Russia and HK were the "original" places where it comes from. That's just where the craziest stuff is being done these days. I was supposed to be on vacation in HK right now but employment issues forced me to cancel.

I'm not the biggest fan (mostly because it gets old quick), but during meet-ups, i find myself on plenty of rooftops. Gaining access to the rooftop itself is most the fun, in my opinion; climbing things, roaming through mechanical rooms, etc. The view is great too, don't get me wrong, but like i said, it gets old pretty quick.
The worst is when you have to climb 60some stories in a muggy stairwell (after a muggy, few mile walk), though. I did that once, and i don't care to again. Heh.

I'm a tunneller, in my opinion rooftopping, and everything in between is all the same thing... we all want to explore, find amazing places, and even hidden secretes... it's either in your blood, or not.

Happy exploring,

Due to the lack of real abandonments in this area, this is something I have always been curious about, but only really tried--and succeeded a couple times--during college on a few campus buildings (I had a legit reason to be in the building, so it was much less risky)

Pro tip; often a smokestack without smoke = steam tunnels (is this still called a smokestack, or something else?)

Can anyone point me to any good reading on the matter?

Like Luminous I've succeeded in gaining rooftop access to buildings on campus. I was always fairly confident in those excursions as I know the buildings very well and was more than likely the only person there. Unfortunately the views in my city aren't nearly as breathtaking as those found in the link DJ Craig posted. Even so, I am still incredibly drawn towards rooftops. I think it's a mix of seeing the city from a new perspective along with the adrenaline rush of being somewhere you aren't *supposed* to be.
