Forgotten Railroad Cars

I use the word forgotten rather than abandoned because these cars are all owned by our local tourist railroad, and have sort of be left to rot (Used for parts and possible restoration.. eventually) in their boneyard. Anyways, I regularly volunteer there and photograph their events and trains which also comes with the privilege of getting access to the off limit areas.

*Some images are over processed, I was experimenting and can't find the originals.

The double decker is a retired Metra car from Chicago.

Some box cars rotting away in front of an abandoned elevator, with a still in use elevator in the background. Still looking for a POE for the elevator on the right hand side.

Inside the cab of an old electric locomotive that came from the Utah Copper Company in Bingham, Utah.

This is a nice wide shot showing the electric locomotive some boxcar, a luggage car and a calf locomotive.

This locomotive was built in 1940, after use on a few different railroads it was brought here and turned into a static display due to lack of funds for restoration.

Another doubledecker, this one coming out of service from Kansas City.

Lost back in the wooded area of the property are a few vintage crossing signs.
Untitled by nathanialbrownhttp://, on Flickr">

This is a car from the Chicago South Shore & South Bend, it has been used for parts and now the roof is caving in.
Untitled by nathanialbrownhttp://, on Flickr">

Unfortunately I haven't gotten many good interior shots, this is the interior of an old wooden caboose, like most things on the property it has fallen victim to vandalism and theft.
Untitled by nathanialbrownhttp://, on Flickr">

Here is one final shot, it's not abandoned but still one of my favorite photos from a special night run they ran.
Here's a shot of the steam crew that ran the Night Special at the end of the season! by nathanialbrownhttp://, on Flickr">

It's unfortunate that you can't find the originals, but all over-processing removed some of these images are quite good. Best of luck to finding your un-edited photos!

I took these back in April and wanted to use a few HDR in a series I was working on then messed up and lost the files. I'm hoping I will uncover them soon... I've been checking all my hard drives tonight.

OK.
The effort was appreciated, though.

That was some of the most intense HDR processing I have seen in a long time.
To each guy his own, I guess.

The only photograph I was able to identify with was the last one.

Wow. Single exposure. And subtly processed would have been much preferred here. As the compositions seem decent enough. But we can't tell cause they're so over the top.

That said. Thanks for sharing. I am a fan of old trains.

That pretty well sums it up! I look at these now and really go WTF was I thinking? Sad thing is I sell a few of these in the railroad's gift shop and have sold around 30 prints, and the black and white one was displayed at state fair....

All kidding aside, I actually dig the first one and the black 'n' white one, bro.

I think "over"-processing is a legitimate artistic choice. You don't have to be a journalist; reality can be just a starting point. These are very dramatic images, in a stoned sort of way.

Thanks Radical!

And the artistic value is somewhat of what I like originally. I had started on a project of The Forgotten America Ways, the plan was to shoot locations like this and get stories from some of the older guys that were around during the days when the structures and vehicles were around so there was a story for the photos but the project came to a halt when I got a job. I'm hoping to get back on it this spring but I'm currently working on a project called "Telling the Legacy, Stories of Their Lives", where I'm interviewing veterans and other older people to hear their experiences and document the stories before they're gone.

I went and shot this location again today so more pics are to come!

The general public will always be more drawn to buy "flashy art" over a real looking photo every time.

Especially when they are stoned.
Why be sad? $$$$

Money is certainly a nice benefit.

Here's a few more images from the boneyard that I took last week after the snow.

Thanks! I really liked that one also, and luckily I got the shot when I did since the snow melted the next day!

certainly some good shots there, but regarding post-processing... those images should be used to scare people away from HDR-ing ever... (in the first post=)

no really... its a snake of awfulness that bites its own tail
