It's cold outside and I'm bored, so I decided to try out some double and triple exposures with things I had lying around. I've got a couple more ideas brewing, but here's what I've done so far. Thoughts and critiques welcome.

Saw a couple of these on your Flickr. Neat idea! #3 is my favorite.

#1 should be used as a logo for this site and/or some sort of urban exploration group. Simple yet perfectly sums up what its about, very creative. Good job!

Yeah, those photos are bad-ass. Excellent stuff, please do more, I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment. I'm quite inspired by this. I've been pushing myself to do more experimentation with photography and cameras lately. You're saying that you did all of this in camera?

Looks like a tricky setup with the glass and everything. Why not just lay the picks right on top of the black background?

That is pretty cool. So what do you do, take multiple pictures, decrease the opacity, and superimpose them onto one another? Are there any softwares that you use to do this?

I should research this, because the results are amazing. #1 and #2 are my favorites. Great work.

Thanks man! It's good to hear. I was hoping they didn't come off as kinda cheesy. It's funny, your name came up when I was talking to nonconmat yesterday and how I frickin love your full moon stuff. Very inspiring stuff.

Yeah, they were all done in camera besides some contrast, clarity, b&w, etc. The idea with the glass is to separate the background from the objects so no light spills on it. I even taped cardboard around my flash to make sure the light didn't spill anywhere else. This way the camera sees everything but the subject as completely black leaving room there for the next exposure. Plus as a little bonus, dust happened collected on the glass after I cleaned it, giving it a little texture

You could do it that way and maybe get something close to this, but that's no fun! Each of these were taken on a single frame in camera, then I used some basics in photoshop (contrast, a bit of clarity, b&w, etc...) to make them pop a bit more.

I learned a ton doing this. Mostly that when my camera meter shuts off, the multiple exposure I was in the middle of gets saved as is and I have to start all over. That was really annoying until I figured it out. Oh and write down your settings for your test shots. It beats trying to remember them all for 3 exposures.

Awesome, thanks! Haha, We share a common friend, who I really need to call.
Where are you located?
I really thought this was going to be super cheesy when I first saw the thumbnail on Flickr, but it's absolutely not. It's tastefully done and the layering is very subtle, making for a "deep" image that just feels right. The blending and fading is really subtle. I think the analog inclusion of dust adds quite a bit. Part of what makes this great is it includes analog textures without faking them.

So how do you make sure to get it perfectly aligned? This seems like the hardest part after getting all the settings sorted. You know I'm going to try this now. Ack, too many photography / infiltration projects to work on.

I'm usually either in Madison or MSP.

Yeah, alignment was a bitch. I think I used a lens cap or some other circular object to get the picks lined up. Then I just had to make sure my camera was lined up dead center of the picks for the first shot and then dead center of the camera lens for the second shot. The focus point in my viewfinder helped with that.

Edit: I also had two tripods which really helped to go back a forth between shots when I was experimenting with settings. A third would have been even better.

I can't wait to see what you come up with! I have a couple more ideas, so I'll have to find the motivation to make them happen sometime soon.
