Some pictures from a recent outing. A friend of mine builds wooden boats, so we took one out for a spin. This trip was on a rowboat, you can see some abandoned structures along the way that we will save for next time. We found the island a week before when we almost beached one of his wooden sailboats at a certain new york city island jail, leading to some angry police on megaphones yelling at us to get away from the island. We came back with rowboats for stealthy stashing.

On the way there:

I've been curious about the island(s?) around NYC for a little while now. I've always been surprised at how little tagging there is. I mean, obviously you just rowed out there (pretty rad, by the way), so it seems like some enterprising taggers would have done the same. Do I just catch the photos with no graffiti or is it really that clean?

I was totally surprised by the lack of tags myself... I remember saying it to the people I was with. The buildings I was in seemed untouched... no graffiti, no clothes or homeless camps, no evidence of kids drinking (I came across a few beer cans.. but they had the pull tab tops, so they were probably there from when the island was active). There were still rooms full of X-rays photographs and blank pads of questionnaires meant to be filled out by patients ("How was your stay?" "Do you feel it helped you" etc.) The damage seemed to be from the elements only. Really crazy for an island so close to places that are so prolifically tagged up.

It is, its controlled by the NY City parks department and is a Heron Preserve. I know they have been doing environment work on the island lately and plan to do so through 2018 according to an email the parks dept sent me when I asked for permission.

I sent them an email eons ago that went unanswered... I didn't see any birds on the island... I think its a ruse to keep people off the island. Scary fines and moral obligations to respect birds (+ a natural moat of high traffic, treacherous waters next to a heavily patrolled prison) = no pesky explorers... which may explain why it is untagged and untouched... I wonder what they are really hiding on that island...

The birds only nest I think from June-September is their season. When that happens the island is completely off limits even to the Audubon Society that takes care of it, only the police and parks check up on it then. That is when you will get is real trouble being there. Now is the season they will be there working on it.

They answered my email, but I am affiliated with a preservation group so they may have been more inclined to respond.

Row Row Row your boat gently down the stream...

Great initiative from all of you for the purpose of urbex
That is one kewl scale. I would love to see this adventure through the eyes of a GoPro since NY is too far for me.

Thanks for sharing!

Been there once many years ago.

It has a sister island that is much smaller. Not much on it but bird poop.

Speaking of bird poop. If you're up for a more daring small boat adventure there's this bird poop collection point. Watch out for seals.

I know there used to be a house on that island. Any sign of it left?

If you go there, you can sort of make out where the house was, but that's about it.
