Strange Boxes...

I noticed these along the perimeter of an abandoned mill. All the boxes faced into the property. Couldn't figure out what they were, I'm assuming either some kind of motion sensor or a camera housing. Anyone have experience with this setup or know if my assumptions are correct?

It's a weatherproof enclosure for anything you can fit in it. It has a side mounted a/c unit. If it's a camera, it's wireless on some kind of network and generating a fair amount of heat.
The enclosure and a/c would run about $2500 each + whatever's in it. I would guess they're cameras and they think that whatever they're watching has significant value.
I'd be wary.

P.S.- Insurance companies will sometimes require an active surveillance on inactive properties if they are to remain insured.

Yep, those are wireless security cameras. They have been popping up all over in recent years.

Just offer your local neighbourhood bottle kids some pepperoni sticks if they'll throw some mud wads or shoot paintballs all over them.

Good share m8!

Pesky things but I'm sure with a little creativity they could be rendered useless.

Something in that building is worth insuring at significant cost. I'd stay away.

Does that mill still have water flowing into it? Could be like a few in GA that are abandoned but use the water to generate electricity for the local grid and they only take one person to man the controls so it could have gone unnoticed.

Any (external) pictures of the mill in question? I'm kinda curious what this thing looks like, that's they'd put that kind of security up on it.

At the same time, makes me wonder just how abandoned it is. I know there is the insurance angle, but that seems awful high-tech for an abandoned property.

It doesn't seem like a camera to me. No need for a camera to have A/C unless the temps go well into the 100's and stay there. Insurance would probably just go with a regular mounted dome camera anyways. Plus, it being installed on a utility pole says that it's something gov't or utility related - not insurance.

Whatever it is, it needs A/C and a window for checking something. Perhaps a backup battery or network repeater?

*just watched that news video...maybe it is a camera...

What, really? If those are surveillance cameras, they look like they were designed in the '80s.

Seems like they lose half their deterrent effect if they don't LOOK like cameras.

Assuming they are cameras, this is the advice I'd like to receive, and would probably ignore, if this were my thread: Ignore them. Probably nobody's watching them.

If I saw one of those in my neighborhood it would get a paintball grenade. Shady surveillance.

The boxes are specifically NOT surveillance cameras, however the equipment inside is probably a PC that has some local storage and could maintain a couple of cameras elsewhere.
