I've dropped the dime on taggers/vandals at relatively pristine sites before. Fuck 'em. Wouldn't bother even with that little effort if it's a place that's already been blown up though.

One thing to consider is different perspectives of going "too far". We all think vandalizing is going "too far" and therefore potential justification for calling the cops. However, on the flip side, it really doesn't help anyone when the concerned neighbor calls the cops on you because in their mind trespassing itself is going "too far". Even if there is no indication that you will do anything more than take pictures.
