Happy Halloween!

Since you clicked through, I'll assume you can handle what lies ahead. Wouldn't want to spoil it!

This location was tipped off to me via email. These photos are his; when I visited I only had my iPhone, and it was less than useless in this level of darkness.

It used to be some type of funeral home/chapel/mausoleum. It appears to have been abandoned for at least 15 years. It's also completely underground- with only one set of doors for the entire building. We went at night- I'm usually not nervous about abandonments, but this one had me keyed up a few notches.

Without further ado, let's begin!

-----------

This is the room you walk into upon entering the building. One assumes that this is the room where the ceremonies were held.

Note the respirator filter. There was visible mold in the building, and the air was not easy on the lungs.

This is the first room in the left wing of the building. All of these caskets were empty- they appear to have been the display models for the place.

Here's the back room of the left wing. This (empty) room is for final storage of the deceased.

Here's the prep room, in the right wing. In the cabinets we found embalming fluid, anti-decomposition chemicals, kerosene, plus other cans and bottles.

More racks in the right wing. Notice the coffins have the blankets wrapped around them. I've only ever seen that done to a casket as it's lowered into the ground...

The way this casket rusted and bottomed out leads me to believe that they aren't empty...

These boxes were empty. But they looked ready to use...

This box wasn't quite empty... Notice the puddle beneath it.

Yes, that's what you think it is.

Conclusion

Now I'm going to have a better response when someone asks me, "Have you ever found a dead guy?".

Hopefully, this will be the spookiest place I'm in for a while. I was surprised to not find anyone living in here, as I imagine an underground structure with pillow-top boxes in it would be rather comfortable.

(Thanks to Dan for the information on the place and all the pictures that didn't suck!)

In the interests of being respectful to those still resting in this building, I won't be adding this to the DB or putting any identifying information in this thread. If you're in the region and are interested in seeing this place, PM me.

Well that's a Damn nice set KyleSh, you found something very special there and its a very good call to keep the details to a minimum. A Halloween treat for sure. I think that the only place that I've seen that many coffins was here;

After the Funeral

From my time in the business I learned that the blankets are there for protection. It's tougher to sell a scratched casket. As for the damage to the bottoms, you got me. Great set. Awesome location. Thanks for sharing.

Were the shelves holding the blanketed caskets strong? I totally wouldn't've been able to resist the temptation and the curiosity of climbing up to see if they were empty or not. Awesome looking place and a fun explore I'm sure

That's bananas right there. What's above it? Parking, earth, grass?
I don't see how that would ever be an approved burial vault location as it's attached to an occupied building. I've done work on mausoleums (ventilation/mec hanical stuff) and that stink has to go somewhere. Hence the need for "stink pipes" connecting the sealed vaults to the roof.
Maybe they were shut down and nobody went back to check on it.

Perfect Halloween set. I can't imagine that any family members would just accept leaving their loved ones to liquefy in an abandoned funeral parlor, though. I wonder what the circumstance was that allowed there to be bodies left that long?

Also +5 to you for being respectful and not posting the location. Thanks for sharing!

I remember hearing about a funeral home in northern AL a few years ago that shut down due to bodies being burned/discarded in the woods and not buried along with other negligent behavior. If this is in that area it could be the place.

Anywho go back with your camera and get some better shots. Satisfy our curiosity and open a casket on that rack too.

Tri-state no longer exists. The feds tore that place up.

DB - I don't think it was Tri-state. The one I am referring to was near Cullman I thought.

I could be wrong. It happens.
