On the back roads

A friend of mine has been asking me to take her on an explore so yesterday, I invited her to go down to southeast Ohio with me. I had planned to go to two abandoned schools, both of which were in the middle of nowhere so I figured that security risks and the chance of them being gone were minimal. Yeah, I was wrong. We arrived at the first school and discovered that it was being used as a haunted house attraction. Guess we picked the wrong month to try that one. Onto school #2. When we got there, it looked like it would be no problem. The building was wide open and it looked like nobody was around. You couldn't even see any other buildings. As we approached the school a huge man came out of the front door. We asked if it would be OK if we took some pictures but he completely flipped his nickels. So that was a no go. At this point, we're pretty far from home and I don't know how to get to any other locations off the top of my head (I really need to create a personal database for this stuff.) I don't want the day to be a total bust, so we just drove around some back roads to see what we could find.

1. Our first discovery was this building. From the road, it looked like a tiny house but now I'm pretty sure it was a schoolhouse.

2. The only thing inside was this piano.

3. All four interior walls have had decades of people carving graffiti into them. Most of it was actually carved into the walls rather than written on them.

4. Final shot on the way out.

5. Next, we stumbled upon a couple of farmhouses. Both of them were about a day from falling down and my friend wasn't comfortable with that so we skipped them. We did run across a second schoolhouse soon after.

6. There wasn't much here.

7. We did find some old cans and bottles.

8.

9. I'm intrigued by what the rest of this sign says. I think the first two words are "not responsible" but the rest is too faded.

10. Once we found a certain state route, I knew how to get to a large abandoned school I'd been to before. I made a thread about this one a few months ago so I won't redo it here. Even though I didn't get to see anything new, I'm glad my friend finally got to explore something that had more than one room. The day started off pretty frustrating with the haunted house and the explosively angry guy but we both ended up having fun anyway.

Thanks! Large abandoned schools really are some of my favorites. Since I forgot to add it in the original post, here's the thread for the school in the last shot:

That outside shot of the school was amazing! By that I mean that it is located right off of what looks to be a maintained road (w/ the guard rail and all...). It's not as if the school was built in 1872 and on some long forgotten road. Then again, maybe the road was put there long after the school but still the contrast is kind of ironic.
Many thanks for posting the pics!

That school is located in a very rural area where most of the buildings are pretty old. My guess is that the school was probably built before cars were invented and it was just a one-lane dirt road. It was probably built toward the school when it was expanded. Or maybe the road was moved at some point to allow for other construction.

Wow, that looks like a great area, just judging by the number of locations. They may not be big, but I'd say they are pretty cool all the same. Nice pics.

The sign in #9 probably used to read: "NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST ____", where the last word is likely a synonym for "property", such as "goods", "items", "valuables", etc.

The "L" in "LOST" is still visible, and grammar dictates that "FOR" would follow "RESPONSIBLE".

I can't actually take credit for bumping into the big school. I had been there before and directed us there when we couldn't find any new locations. Originally, I found that one on a website dedicated to Ohio schools built prior to the 1960s.
