Looking to expand my catalogue of lenses and wanted to get the forums opinions on what they use as their "go to" lens for Canon.

Thanks!

Ahhh! Can a mod move to this the photography section? Sorry about that.

I have only ever tried a few with my Canon T3i, but the stock 18-55mm is still my fav. I would love to try something that would allow for long-exposure nighttime sky shots, as the 18-55 just dosn't cut it.

I've only ever used the 18-55 which is adequate for exterior shots and hallway shots but leaves a lot to be desired for wide angle shots. I generally shoot vertically for this reason. One day I might upgrade to a Tokina.

Tokina 11-16mm for Nikon is my go to. I'm pretty positive they also make a Canon model. Great for wide shots and capturing entire rooms. Also, aperture goes down to 2.8, which is nice for low light.

Like Intrinstic, i've only ever used the stock 18-55 lens. I also tend to stick to vertical shots, as they are typically more appealing with this lens.
I do plan to purchase a Sigma wide-angle soon, though.

Another one here for the tokina 11-16mm. Nice and wide, super sharp even at 2.8, and built like a tank. The 2.8 aperture makes it suitable for low light and star photography. I really wish it zoom to 24mm. Then I could leave my 24mm prime at home.

Sigma 10-20 F4 is almost rusted to my Canon. Canon 50mm F1.8 for close-ups and such. It's dirt cheap but pretty good quality and a prime lens makes you respect framing a lot more. It sounds like a poor man's setup but it's just enough for me.

A Tokina 12-24 is collecting dust in a closet, great lens and better quality than the Sigma but I miss that extra 2mm a lot.

Point being, if you're only gonna use it for abandoned buildings I'd go as wide as possible. Imho you can't really photograph buildings with a lens >18mm, every picture is going to look like a close-up. Pictures need breathing space. But that could be a matter of taste I guess. If you like other genres of photography too, a lens like the 17-40 would be a good choice for various purposes.

While I agree that (generally) wider is better inside or in confined spaces/underground, you do have to consider the sensor size when giving advice on what ranges are good.

For example, on my full frame (5Dmkii) the Canon 17-40 is every bit as wide as my Tamron 10-24 is on a crop sensor like my old XSi.

Do you find issues with a 4f? Or do you normally pack a tripod for low light situations?
