i usually hate all my stuff, but i like this video.
if youre on a phone, you probably wont have sound, and the music in this video really dictated the cuts i made and what i showed....
so you should probably wait and watch it on a computer...in HD....with sound...

Very nicely done. This is well edited, and this work is a great example of my point that the music score can, and often does, make or break the whole piece. This in my opinion was a PERFECT choice of music to go with this video. Very interesting location.

tyvm!
i taped my first building in 1996. it sucked.
in fact, i hate most of my videos, but they got better as time went along.
this was shot in MN. its in better shape than any kirk ive ever seen.
its guarded as a motherfucker, but i had permission ;)

and the music, i try to pick out a song that fits the building or situation. that usually takes longer than editing the video!
this one was quite easy though. usually, i pick songs that "everyone likes", and sometimes, i use a song i hate because it fit. this song was a perfect fit AND i love pink floyd

I do video editing every day. It's what I do for a living. And I'm rarely happy with anything I do. lol. So don't feel bad about that. Usually editors are their own worst critics. I've never yet done a UE video. I shot one last Sunday afternoon. I'm going to try to put it together sometime in the next week, but I don't know if I'll make it.

I used a quadcopter for some aerial shots but the wind just made it nauseating to watch. So I ordered a gyro gimbal to put on my quadcopter to steady the video. I'll go back this next weekend, if I get it installed, and re-shoot the aerial parts.

But you are exactly right. I've seen a several videos that we've done here that took longer to find the music I like and get the voice overs, etc., in place, than it did to edit the video. It's time consuming sometimes.

But with this video, I think it was an excellent choice. It works. Very well. All this stuff about video is mostly a matter of taste. I try to always tell people that. It's good to take suggestions, criticism, etc., but in the end you have to create a video to your tastes. That's what makes it an art. Steven Spielberg or any other director will ask opinions and hire people to help make the right decisions, but in the end it is his work, his choices, and his artistic form that makes it a box office hit, or a pile of garbage.

You did a damn good job on this!

Nice!
I'm surprised that YouTube didn't strip the music off it (they've done that to a few of mine)

I've crashed it several times, lost it, crashed it again, bunch of times. They are pretty dang durable actually. I've hit the ground hard with this one. Once so hard that it bent one of the prop arms. But it went back together nicely and it still flies like a champ.

I'll let you know when I post it. It will be after the weekend I'm sure. Depending on how long it takes me to set that gimble once I get it. And this location is small and very plain. It's just something for some practice really.

Your camera did a good job. Lot of people (including my sister) don't believe me, but the camera is important, but you can take a regular consumer level camera and make spectacular videos if you know how to use the camera, and if you know how to edit. Seems to me that you know both pretty well.

I'm lucky. I shoot and edit for a living. I have some really good equipment that belongs to my employer. I get to shoot with good stuff without having to buy it. Including the quadcopter. I can't afford that stuff on my own.

i have 2 sony handycams, but i dont have the "shake free" option on mine. they have HUGE hard drives though. theyre cheap and they get the job done.
i edit with premiere.

to get away with the shakes, i dont wear boots (i wear tactical shoes instead) and i shoot everything twice or more til i get the damn shot. im far to lazy to carry a tripod, and every time i have, i end up leaving them in the building.

i miss the old, big, heavy VHS-C camera i started with. the footage looked shitty as hell, but it had some weight to it and was easy to keep steady.
i also drink 99% of the time when im out too lol

i also have 3 gopro type cameras (but only one is actually a gopro), i dont use them often.
i was gonna go drop one of them off the fisher body plant this weekend, but some ass lit it on fire and a fireman got hurt there today. i guess there was a collapse. im pissed

I've got a sony handycam too. It's an old one but it works well. I don't use it too much anymore since I use my work camera most of the time. I do carry a tripod most of the time. I just can't get a steady shot without one. But it doesn't have to be perfectly steady. Where most people mess up is "firehosing". A little shake isn't bad. But when they swing it around from scene to scene like you would your own eyes, it just doesn't work.

Those old heavier cameras did make for some steady shooting.

i think im going to take apart a tripod and rig it so i can add a weight to these sonys. theyre awesome, and obviously shoot well, but keeping them steady is a BITCH!
all of my videos, minus the ones shot in vhsc, have either been shot on an old sony point and shoot, or a sony handicam.

the REAL trick is to know what youre about to shoot. when i go into a building and dont know what to expect, it can be a mess.
however, this building was just FULL of good shots, i couldnt have gotten it wrong if i tried. i STILL have 2 days worth of video from there that no one has seen yet. im saving it for project kirkbride. thats not gonna be easy cuz i KNOW theyll make me use a song i dont know or like lol.
ill pull it off though!

A weighted monopod would be a good way to add some stablization to the shots. Video is so much harder than still photography.

Youtube itself offers post production stabilization, for a few of my videos they asked me if I wanted them to fix it

Unless you've had better luck that I have with YouTube's stabilization, I'd avoid it. I've tried it a couple times and have always reverted to the original. Their stabilization tool, for me at least, has sucked!

I guess it worked ok for you by looking at this. The times I've tried it, it only made the video worse. Maybe it was something I did wrong.

One issue was that I tried using it on video that I had taken with my quadcopter right after I first started using it. VERY shaky video. I got the gimble for it yesterday. I'm taking it out in the morning and re-shoot the aerial video of that building I told you about. I'll try to get the video put together before long.
