Geocaches with the "Abandoned Structure" tag

Hey everyone,

Trying to get myself involved in the community again.

Here's a GPS Exchange (GPX) file with every geocache in the Great Lake area (centered at Chicago, IL. then spanning out 500 miles circular) that has the "Near Abandoned Structure" tag.

https://dl.dropbox...55032/14674601.gpx

I would not simply throw this in your GPS then head out hoping to find a good site; but it's pretty useful to throw into Google Earth then scout out a few spots.

I'll be happy to generate GPXs for other areas, just ask!

Can you please explain how you did that? I used Google maps online version, but could not replicate your results. This looks like a nice tool, if I just knew how to use it.

If you're taking requests, would you mind generating one centered on Baltimore, MD?

Cool tool, thanks for sharing it!

I don't want to use the above file. I'd like to create my own of different search area.

Great Idea! It would be awesome if you would author a nice tutorial with step-by-step instructions and screen captures outlining the process. There seems to be a lot of interest in your system.

Post it in the tutorials section:

Thanks again!

Where does the "near abandoned structure tag" originate? Is that something that you've created, or is that from geocaching.com or something? Having recently gotten back into caching, this is fantastic.

As requested, I made a tutorial for using GPX files in Earth.

I've got queries lined up for Baltimore, Cleveland, and Rosemont.

I'll post those as soon as they're done

Edit: They're done!

Baltimore

Cleveland

Rosemont

Don't forget that these all span 500 miles out, so one just near you will probably cover most of your area.

That tag comes from geocaching.com, it's one of that attributes that the cache creator can set.

Sorry about that, I can't edit that post, but this post has ones that were generated only a few hours ago, so it's more up to date.
