Made some custom frames for a show

I have some photos going up at a show on Friday and I decided why not design and make some custom frames to fit with the theme this time.

I got my friend to weld up the metal and then went to Goodwill and bought some crappy $4 framed oddities for the glass and backing.

I then cut the glass to my desired size and trimmed off the corners.

I took some left over cap screws, trimmed them down a bit, drill and threaded the frame and used some rubber washers to secure the glass

Pressing the photo and backing in.

These are the photos going up except now with the custom frames.

I really dig the industrial feel of those frames, they really compliment the prints

That's awesome! Maybe they become even more awesome when you put them outside for a few weeks to get some rust going. Unless it's stainless steel of course

Thank you. I hadn't seen anything made like that before so it was a fun challenge.

I chose not to shoot the steel with a clear coat so it could age along with wherever it is. The unfinished bolts will rust too.

I'll take a photo of them up this weekend.

Those are very unique. Hopefully you remove the watermark before printing them.

Those are very cool! I like that you were able to use actual metal and I think a touch of oxidation will make them perfect.

Years ago I was a painter and used to paint the same types of abandoned industrial places I take photos of.

Since framing is damn near the priciest part of showing your art, I also used to make my own frames. Only I would simulate rust by painting my wood frames. Plenty of tuts on the web about how to do that and some turned out great. I still have one or two up in the attic maybe when I get home I'll photograph them and put em up.

But good on you! Don't spend $$$ on average ordinary frames when you can make your own and have them be awesome!

Very nice work and I like the metal on metal theme.

One thing though, that glass looks like it's got pressure on it in the piece you have set up already. You can see how it's bowed out from the frame between the allen bolts. Glass like that does not like bending pressure and tends to blow out when it reaches it's threshold. Also take into account those metal frames may expand and contract a tiny bit which could come into play.

Good eye. I'll probably do the backing differently next time. This time for time's sake I cut a cardboard piece from another frame back exactly to size so it would press right into the frame from behind (I used a set screw at top and bottom to keep photo/board from bowing and to keep it in place).

So the only pressure is from the cardboard backer.

I actually had a frame standing up on the table, cleaning its glass for the umpteenth time, and it slipped and fell to the table- And didn't break at all. I stopped being so babysome with them after that.

TL;DR She'll hold. And you can't tell once on the wall.

I really hope that was a joke ha-ha.

The frames look amazing, you have a great imagination.
It is nice to see something slightly off-topic from urbex once in a while around here.
