I'm new to uer.ca and Chicago and would love to find some rooftoppers in the area to explore the city with. In case it is relevant I'm a photographer as well, so I would definitely like to take some pictures if there are any photo addicts out there

I live in Arlington Heights but I have a car and am willing to ride share.

Oh fer fuck's sake, more rooftopping nonsense. After last week's rooftopper fame whore blog drama amongst photographer peeps, I can't stand to see the word "rooftop" again.

If you want to do rooftops, your best bet is to do it alone anyways. Just go in random building, enter elevator, go as high as you can, and look for unlocked doors with roof access. If you can't access the roof, move on to the next building and try again. You'll eventually succeed. It's as simple as that.

Try some hotels first, if you're inexperienced.

If you love rooftops, go exploring and figure them out alone. Extra people just become a liability to your visibility and suspicious look when other people see you.

...

If you love the idea of photographing your feet dangling over a building or photographing a friend perched somewhere precarious to get "mad street cred" or whatever....well....fuck off.

Dude bro, rooftops were so 2013.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!
Don't try to have a UER e-penis! You won't impress anyone! This especially means you, Minneapolis MN newbies!

Why the animosity? I had nothing to do with those articles and have no interest in dangling feet, instagram fame, or risking anyone's life for a picture. I don't even like social media, but you would know that if you spent some of your energy getting to know me instead of just assuming things about me and then swearing at me. I thought the entire point of UER was for adventurers of all shapes, sizes, and experience levels to interact in a positive way. I see nothing wrong with the intent of my original thread and find your response unnecessary.
You could argue that going with more than one person is tactically disadvantageous, but I like exploring with other people and am also looking to make some friends here. What's wrong with that?

There is nothing new under the sun. Just because it has been done before, doesn't mean I have done it before (and I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who haven't done it either and would like to give it a try)

I'm not even sure how to respond to this one. I haven't graduated college yet, so I couldn't be a cop even if I wanted to...

My suggestion would be to share some stories and some discreet photos from your adventures. Build a bit of a rep., and then hopefully people won't be so quick to call you a cop.

Thank you for the constructive feedback. I've decided to start a photo series on historically haunted locations. I'm sure a few of the places I'll find along the way will fit in on this site, so that could be a start

Raven, sorry I never responded to your PM, but I was very busy last week and spent this whole weekend in some bitchin' caves. Your photography is very good and your website is awesomely efficient on mobile screens. Props for that because despite how many people use mobile devices, mobile sites still generally aren't good enough.

I wouldn't take offense to clockwork, he actually gave you some pretty good advice for getting started. Keep in mind that a lot of people come in here with the attitude: 'I'm new, give me locations and hold my hand through stuff because I don't know what I'm doing and I don't want to go out and learn'. Plus some people don't even really care about exploring, they just want some of that 'mad street cred' for looking cool doing it.

Also keep in mind that while you posted in the rookie forum ( no one really reads that thread) and introduced yourself to the southeast section, you haven't publicly introduced yourself in your home section here. Make some threads about locations around here you've explored, give us a little info about yourself. It's kind of a dick move to tell clockwork 'you should get to know me' when you haven't put forth the effort of properly introducing yourself in this section. All you said was: I live around here, I'm a photographer (that can mean many different things), I have a car, and I want to do rooftops.

Based on PMs, I think you're a good photographer and will most likely be a pretty cool dude to explore with. Get a little more acquainted with the community and show us some of what you've done. You'll occasionally get some harsh replies, but getting defensive will never be a productive answer. Keep your cool, make some friends, and decide who you actually want to spend the time exploring with, don't just ask random people for location handouts. That very well may have not been your intention, but that's kind of how it came off.

I think you'll do just fine here and I look forward to seeing more of your awesome photography. Happy exploring!

Thank you for the kind remarks on my photography, I really appreciate it .

Perhaps I was a little too aggressive in my response to Clockwork. I see now why my original post in this thread ruffled some feathers, but I really didn't understand that at the time and Clockwork's comment took me by surprise.

I would like to clarify that my intention with this thread was to find people, not locations. Of course I am excited about the possibility of exploring awesome places that I might never have found without this site and the people that make it great, but I'm way more excited about meeting awesome people.

I am glad that I created this thread sooner rather than later, as I've learned a lot from it. Hopefully people are willing to overlook it in the future because I didn't know the lay of the land when I posted it.

I'm definitely going to take some time tonight to properly introduce myself. Not doing that earlier was an oversight for sure. My B, guys!

Thank you so much for taking the time to point this stuff out. I really do want to explore for the experience, not the instagram followers or cred, and I feel as though you have drastically increased my chances of becoming a trusted member of this community. I hope to explore something with you in the future.

p.s. How were the caves? Sounds pretty bad-ass...
