Mere trespassing or more?

Recently as I was talking about urban exploring, one of my friends made the statement that's its just trespassing. After considering his claim, I actually felt enlightened and came to agree with him.

Before I would explain UE as "Visiting buildings and other man-made structures that are abandoned, or where you just aren't supposed to be." But now I'm starting to think, is UE is just a cool way to mask up what it actually is: mere trespassing.

Obviously there will be exceptions to this e.g. when visiting sites that you are actually allowed to explore. But as a general rule, would you agree that essentially all that UE is is trespassing?

Some of you might start explaining about how photography or something else is a vital part of UE. But those things are just a side effect that frequently occur alongside UE. UE in itself is just what it says - urban exploring. Not documenting any of the discoveries e.g. through filming, but simply exploring.

So what is your verdict? Could you just replace UE and say that you are a trespasser? This word of course has the negative connotation attached to it. But you could right away explain the moral code of UE. Enough talk, I wanna hear what you guys think!

It's only trespassing if you can be proven to have ignored an explicit written or verbal prohibition from the property owner [i.e. a sign].

Naturally, most self-described explorers do that all the time. Either way, so what?

If you're in it to merely trespass, you're in the wrong hobby.

I wouldn't be a hiker if the pretty places weren't so far. But then there would be a lot of other people there and I don't like people.

Fences are just another doorway for more photos and exploring, and a hurdle for fewer people.

you have got it the wrong way around:
UE isn't trespassing, its exploring. Trespassing, like photo's, is a side effect of UE

I agree with this.

Anything can sound bad when you connect the actual law to it. Saying we are exploring shows we are there for a sole purpose other than to trespass. It allows us to explain we are not out to do harm. Think about this, if you are exploring and a cop stops you, are you going to walk up to them and say "Oh hi I'm just trespassing." Or are you going to say you are exploring and taking pictures.

One sounds like a reasonable thing to do, the other sounds like you are plainly up to no good. At least that is my opinion.

Sometimes it involves burglary, theft, assault, and disposing of evidence [bodies].

Nah, it's easy to see why cops and law-and-order types or just plain apathetic to the idea of urban exploration types would say that; but really, the intangible aspect of wanting to explore off-limits places for the sake of exploring them, to see what's over the fence or behind the door that's behind the NO TRESPASSING sign, really does make it a little something more than "mere trespassing". Obivously, these internal motivations don't much matter to the authorities in trying to stop you, but it is a little more distinct than just "mere trespassing".

Also, as already stated, it's not just trespassing. It's breaking and entering, and burglary or theft as well in some cases.

When someone (that I trust reasonably well) asks me what I do for fun, I tell them I'm a Serial Trespasser, because it sounds WAY less retarded than "I'm an explorer! I explored a building once that a thousand people used to work in every day!"

And yes, I've said that to cops and security as well. It's not like they're standing there, searching for the word for "being where you're not allowed" and if no one mentions "trespassing" by name then maybe they won't think of it...

(Too many people over-think it. Before I found a community, it was simply "Adventure Tuesday!" where I'd get out of the house and go do something fun.)

WTF man? What happened to "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footsteps."? If you don't adhere to theses rules, you are just a criminal, not an urban explorer. And in that case you deserve and should definitely get into huge loads of shit with security and cops!

Oh please. Can I interest you in a UER member card so you can show it to the cops and they'll know your just an awesome explorer, and not a trespasser? Quit trying to put "urban exploration" on some type of pedestal. Most people here probably have a box/shelf/room full of stuff they "rescued" from abandoned buildings.

I guess you need to ask yourself why you like to do this hobby? I for one love to explore and take photos and video. I don't go to break stuff, tag walls or steal things. Whatever people do is their own thing. But if you are going into a location with clearly marked signs that say "no trespassing" you are doing something illegal. It really comes down to do you really mind if you do so? I don't as long as I don't get caught, and even when I have gotten caught I have left with just warnings. I mean don't be an ass if you do get caught, at least for me it has been easy enough to walk away.

If you are worried about getting in trouble this may be a bad hobby for you.

When I explain it to people I just say I like checking out abandoned buildings. Lame aren't I? They ask why often, and I don't know...I just do

I have dug up plants from a place that was to be demolished, you just know some fool in an excavator was gonna run them over, so why not bring them to my garden?

It's more than trespassing and a lot less than some would have you to believe.

It's illegal curiosity.
