Sorry about photo size/quality.

Hi all, new here. I posted over in the welcome thread for anyone interested. I live in West Omaha (Elkhorn).

The neatest thing I have found while out is an abandoned "neighborhood" or camp or something. It's located near Plattsmouth.

I have tried researching about it but I can't find squat and I'm not to keen on sharing or asking about it due to I don't think but a handful of people know about it. My grandpa has a forest in his back yard that I went out in to explore. Its near two rivers meeting up. At first, we came across some random concrete pads and stairs in the woods. I then stumbled across a collapsed house, or what was left of it. Upon further walking with a friend we found multiple remnants of buildings, including one that fell into a wash out.

We have searched around and found some interesting things. We both collected about a dozen or so bottles (out of hundreds) and a few other things too. I found a porcelain P&G sign buried in the dirt along with a Studebaker hubcap. Later on we found the whole car rusting out in the ditch.

We noticed the "houses" went from newest to old foundation wise. The last one we saw before turning back was a stone foundation, almost like cobblestone.

I really want to get back out there if anyone would like to join me. I haven't really been down there with all the weeds etc so I don't know how "thick" it is.

Odd (water?) wooden passageway. Not sure what it was for but it was made out of wood. Maybe a crawl space for the previous building?

Some cash boxes full of dirt and rust. Not my lucky day I guess.

My two tips of advise for you

1> Size down your pictures a bit, im not even on a mobile device and these are WAY to large for my laptop,

2> you only need to hit the post button once, , you triple posted this thread

but other than that, welcome to UER, a little bit of a rough start, but I think you will do a bit better on your next post

**EDIT**

I resized them to 800x600, they seem to load a lot faster and smoother now. Thanks for letting me know!

What you can do is hit modify on your original post within the first 24 hours of posting it, and in each picture link, you will see pixel dimensions added

like this [ img=640,480]http://www.yourURL.com/yourpicture.jpg[/img]

you can change the numbers after the = sign, and the UER code will resize them for you

Welcome to UER the great plains forum isn't too exciting, good to see some new shots here. I lived in Lincoln for 5 years you've got all kinds of cool stuff on that end of the state. You might try getting an old map from the library or county and it might give you some clues as to what was there.

I feel like I am in ...well... the great plains ;) Posted by willskith Unfortunately, due to overuse of tonemapping, photography was gradually ruined and now stands with halos.

I find this intriguing.
Ask your Grandfather what he might know about it.

Here are some ideas for research:

-Old USGS topo maps for the area (usually show structures, might label the area if it was big enough to have a post office once, or had a school or hospital).
http://store.usgs....48&uiarea=2%29/.do

-County plat books (sometimes online, more often at the county courthouse or local library). Will list who owned a property and often show house locations.

-Fire insurance maps (Rascher, Sanborn, etc). Usually exist for larger towns, like more than 1,000 residents. Often available in print/microfilm at libraries and museums, or online via your library or university computers. Will show central town neighborhoods in some detail (including size/type of house construction, outbuildings, etc), and any commercial or institutional buildings in the immediate area.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

THis is another one of those places that's just a mystery. I'd love to come take a look next time I get to the area from Iowa!

Fascinating! Were you ever able to find out the history of the place? It is so strange to think that people lived their lives there, and it has all since vanished from memory.
