Maybe this doesn't warrant a whole thread but I couldn't find anywhere else to post that seemed better, but does anybody know what this sign means? I looked up the word "dudded" and only found urban dictionary definitions.
I'm just really curious what it means, as it seems pretty grim toned lol

This one had been removed and laid on the ground

And here is where it came from I assume. This area is walled off completely. There is a 20 foot concrete wall behind me. The only way in here is through one of those windows. Also this is the 2nd story, so we are standing on the roof of the first story.

Any ideas? Also feel free to post pictures of signs you have found that you have NO IDEA what they mean.

A dudded area is military term for an impact area where the ordinance is the type which leave a chance of duds. A dudded impact area would be something like a live mortar or grenade range, where real explosives are being used. A non-dudded impact area would be something like a rifle range or a range where non-explosive training rounds were used. So pretty much that sign is saying "Danger, unexploded ordinance" Be careful.

Wow o_0 that's pretty crazy. However seeing as how this was previously a car dealership and hotel, and the building is surrounded flush by active buildings in the middle of a small town downtown area, I highly doubt that's the case here.

Not only can I not think of any good reasons for explosives to be here, there's no way it would be safe for the surrounding community literally a few feet away (there's an active parking garage on the other side of the brick wall behind me)

Any other thoughts?

Yeah, the sign simply does not belong there and is not original to the location.

I could see someone liking that sign and wanting to keep it, so maybe they took it home (or to wherever that building is). Of course just a guess, though.

Yeah I guess... but it's weird that there are so many of them. As you can see in the 2nd photo, every one of those white signs are the same one as the first, just faded and weathered. And they are only right here in this sectioned off area. Just weird...

Are there any signs that the building has ever been used for police training or anything like that? If so, the signs could refer to smoke or flash-bang grenades.

Still seems pretty unlikely, though.

No nothing like that. Closest thing to it I have heard of is fire fighters using it to haul hoses. Actually they leave the hoses in the lobby. But no I've never seen any signs indicating that. This building is straight up in the middle of a downtown area surrounded by working businesses. It's also the local whore building where every person ever to live in this town has gone into.

I would say one of two things happened.

1: Local police did use it for some kind of training once upon a time and they put those up because they were using flashbags or something.

2: They are just military surplus that the owner at some time got a hold of, probably very cheaply through a gov surplus action, and just used them as cheap boards, maybe hoping they would deter people. I think a scenario similar to this is likely.

Looks like a piece of scrap sign somebody used to board up those windows. It could have just as easily been a Toy's R Us sign or Arby's drive thru sign.

It don't mean theres Transformers or roast beef samiches in there though.

And maybe the guy figured that most average trespassers won't know what "dudded" means, will read the sign and see the danger symbols, and think "I probably don't want to fuck around in there, sounds dangerous!" Kind of a passive form of deterrence.

One of the apartment buildings near my home that I like to rooftop from time to time has taken to hanging "wet paint" signs on the bottom rungs of its fire escape ladders. They've been there for weeks. Even if they HAD been freshly painted at some point (which they haven't,) I'm pretty sure they would have dried by now. I believe they are just being used to scare away the nervous, the unprepared, and the lazy would-be climbers that must come along every once in a while.

EDIT: Oh, sorry, Soldat already said everything that I just ended up typing in his entry above. I'll leave mine because of the personal example, though.

From the Tank Girl comic book...

"Stone buildings will be among the last to disappear when we're gone. As the fleeting materials of modern construction decompose, the world will retrace our steps back to the Stone Age as it gradually erodes away all memory of us."
