Exploring with pets?

I did a search and it didn't turn up anything. My wife and I have a pup and can't always get someone to watch her. Does anyone here take their dogs with them & do you take any extra precautions?
We would leave her at home but she gets bad separation anxiety

Being a dog owner, I personally, think its a very bad idea to take a pet along. Not only are there the obvious dangers we face, but certain particles or chemicals in the air may affect them differently than they do humans. Also, a toxic plant (apples, Babies Breath, Hemlock, etc are all very common ones where I live) could be growing around the exploration site that they might eat. POE's are another thing, many of them are dangerous to us humans and our opposable thumbs let alone a poor dog.

As for the separation anxiety, he will have to get over it eventually. Honestly, with my dogs, I've found that toys and the like (especially the KONG toys you can fill up with peanut butter help distract them while you are gone and lessen the ohnoownerisgonewhatdoIdo stress they go through.

Just my two cents

I've taken my dogs a few places...but, only places I'm comfortable with. ...they can easily go trucking through and fall through the floor because they're a lot less cautious than us.

I think it depends on the location really. I would never bring one of mine on location due to potential asbestos and all the glass and metal I usually find on the ground of abandoned places. You just never know! I'd send her to a daycare or have someone pet sit for you if she's that bad.

I wouldn't suggest it. The main priority should be getting your dog okay with the separation. Take her to some dog training or get her some toys to help calm her.

Abandoned buildings are very dangerous for humans - and moreso for dogs. They can easily step on glass or nails because they don't look out for that kind of stuff. They can roll around in dust and asbestos. It's just not a good idea. Unless you've been to the place before and you're sure it'll be okay.

If you're determined to take your pup with you, buy her some doggy boots to protect her feet.

I have a brindle pit bull and a little fluffy Jack Russell cross. I wouldn't take them to an abandonment because of the aforementioned sharp things on the ground, but if I'm exploring bushland or old farmland I'll bring them for a walk.

I also think the location depends on whether or not I bring my Rottie along....he is about as graceful as a drunk lumberjack and I fear not only could he injure his self but me too....but there have been locations I have gone to that I have brought him.

I tried the safe booty thing on him....um yeah....NO he was having none of it !!!

I don't normally walk around with my nose two inches from the ground sniffing up everything in my path... but my dog does.

There's just way too much nasty, toxic crap on the floor of most of the places i've been to for me to even consider bring my dog.

Another thing to consider is what happens if you guys wind up getting arrested while exploring? I don't know for sure, but I am assuming the police would have your dog transported to the local pound, which in most cases would require some sort of payment to recover her. So, after you paid bail to get yourselves out of jail, you would probably have to pay bail to get your dog out as well.

And god forbid you guys run into some angry, crotchety old property owner with a shotgun. They might do something to harm her just because they are angry. My grandpa used to always threaten to shoot the neighbors' dogs if they crossed his property line. He never actually did it, but you never know with some people.

I'm pretty sure my cats would just run the fuck away, and i'd have a hell of a time trying to track their dumbasses down.
Unlike dogs, i'm sure they'd do just fine exploring, though. Agile little guys. Plus, they have 9 lives afterall. Fall into a flooded silo? Fuck it. Still got 8.

I've explored with dogs before, though. Not my dogs, but they seemed to do just fine. The underground tends to be a lot less dangerous as far as derpy dogs go, as well.

Booties are a must, going to get her some 1000 denier Alaskan ones. They're supposedly the ones they use for mushing and talking with a rep, they should be fairly strong. I wouldn't take her anywhere with high asbestos but certain places that are just a foot danger I'd bring her along. She's a smart working dog and can navigate pretty well. I'll try her on a local site or 2 that are fairly safe & see how she does.

Ed, obviously you need some sort of crab tank/hat arrangement. Why would he be interested? Change of scenery I guess.

I would not take dogs, for all of the reasons listed above.

For the separation anxiety:
1) treats involving time spent working to get a goody out (e.g. stuffed Kong, puzzle toys, kibble frozen into a block of ice).
2) never make a big deal out of either coming home or leaving the house (I actually have to ignore one of my dogs for a bit when I come home).
3) try getting a Xanax (alprazolam) Rx from your vet. You can give a dose only when needed (about 20 min. before you leave the house).
