Took a trip to New Mexico for a few days and stopped at a few places along the way. Mix between cell phone and camera shots.

First place is New Mexico State Penitentiary. A riot broke out February 2nd, 1980 at 1:40am. Over crowding and poor inmate/officer relations were mostly the cause of it. At 1:40am, intoxicated inmates overpowered the guards working E Dorm, taking their radios and keys. One inmate said over the radio "We own this prison now". 33 inmates died during the riot which lasted 36 hours.

The crash gates were left open due to construction going on and were inoperable. Within 20 minutes, the inmates would have access of the whole prison, by gaining entry into the Central Control Picket.

From there they would go cell block to cell block releasing fellow inmates. They would finally go to Cell Block 4, where the 'snitches' and child molesters were housed. Once the 'execution squad' showed up, they went cell by cell, killing inmates. 16-20 inmates were killed on Cell block 4.

Was it the riot that caused the prison to close or did it continue operations until it was closed later?

Interesting segue from prison riot death to theater.

Yea it's completely abandoned again. It closed for a year and reopened in 1981 for a few more years, then finally closed for good. The riot ended mostly because inmates started giving up. The hallways were flooding from broken pipes and then freezing since it was February. They started running out of food an overdosing on medication since they broke into the infirmary. I'm sure it would have lasted longer if it wasn't for those factors.

Thanks everybody!
