Grumman Aircraft Facility- New York (Picture Heavy)

Today, I visited an old military aviation manufacturing facility. A few years ago arsonists burnt down most of the buildings, leaving just shells of what they used to be. Nature has began to retake the buildings, as shrubbery can be found all over the floors. A test pilot was killed at this facility while flying an experimental version of the F3F fighter. Its sad to see a place with such rich history destroyed by vandals, but its still a very interesting site nonetheless.

Haha I'm not sure how stable it was but I made sure to not touch anything...the entire second floor was missing though from the fire!

Very cool! I love all the plant life growing inside. Seeing nature taking back over is just one of the coolest things to me and one of my favorite parts of exploring.

Looks like the one on Conklin St. in East Farmingdale. Which if it is, it would be Fairchild-Republic, not Grumman.

After Fairchild moved to Hagerstown, Maryland in 1931, Grumman Aircraft Engineering built planes at the airport from 1932 until the spring of 1937. Its had a few owners as I understand!

If you want to get that technical, then it was originally Fulton Truck. It was Grumman from 1932-1937 when it became Seversky. After Seversky, it went back to Fairchild. The last aircraft company in there was Fairchild. The last occupant was a flea market.

Fairchild was in that area continuously from 1927 to 1987. The only thing Fairchild moved to Hagerstown in 1931 was the engine manufacturing. Fairchild continued to use their Farmingdale facilities through 1987 and closed down following the USAF's cancellation of the T-46A trainer program.
