Anyone on here use a handheld gps still or does everyone rely on 4G when they're in the woods?

I use maverick on my android but it still tends to be spotty in certain areas. I'm trying to find one that has satellite imagery like you would get using Google maps or bing. Any suggestions are welcome

Backcountry Navigator for Android. It allows you to cache imagery, and if you pair it with a proper GPS receiver like the Garmin GLO, it is great even in spotty areas. It's not perfect, but I use it on my Nexus 7 until I finish writing my own mapping app.

That's the plan. I'll put it up on the app store once it's complete, but it's just something that I'm currently working on in my spare time. It could be a while still.

I'm not that good in programming yet (still I can do basic android apps) but if you ever put your code on github or something I'd love to help.

I'm too much of a control freak to let anyone else touch a program I'm working on, but thanks for the offer.

I use a Garmin Oregon 600. Can't beat it. But I use it for hardcore back-country backpacking trips & such; it's overkill for UER purposes, if that's all you need a GPS for.

I use my Garmin Colorado with topo maps and a few road maps for certain areas. Mainly I carry it with my when I ride my bike but it has come in handy for alternate escape routes.

I was looking at the Oregon 450 for mainly ue purposes, my note 3 is good enough for driving but once I'm even remotely "off grid" it socks more than a hoover.

I've gotten spoiled by bing birds eye & Google maps and I was looking for a handheld that has similar maps, does the Oregon or any other support these?

The garmin glo that was mentioned seems good but might be a battery drainer. If I can find it cheaper (budget shot to hell atm) I'll pick it up and hope it solves my where the hell am I problem
