Robbery stash found

I was exploring a storm drain in the San Francisco Bay Area last week for the first time (see my original post: http://www.uer.ca/...rrpage=4&pp#post75), and found a bag with some $20 bills next to it. I didn't take it or looked inside the pockets at first, because I thought it might belong to a homeless person, so I decided to leave it and come back in a few days to see if it is still unclaimed.

Today I came back to visit again, and the bag was still there intact. So I decided to look inside the pockets, and I found way more than I expected: a phone without a sim card, $400 in cash and several credit cards!

Another bag with clean folded clothes was also present not far from the first one.

I really wondered who left that here. A runaway teen? A homeless guy? Is he still alive?

When I left the drain, I googled the name on the credit cards, and discovered that the guy was arrested for robbery just 2 days before I found his bag.
http://www.examine...oplifting-incident
Apparently, he stole way more money than I found, so I believe he took the rest of the cash with him.

I still don't know what to do with that. All the leftover bills are stained with a red ink that indicates that they have been stolen, so they are pretty much unusable. And I don't think the police will benefit much from this information now that they have found the guy. I think I will just put everything back inside the bag at the next occasion...

Anyway, that was an unusual and unexpected discovery.

You have evidence for an active investigation and probably items that would be helpful in assisting law enforcement.

There may even be a reward. In any event, these items are no use to you. Why not bring them to your local police station particularly since you've just posted it publically for all to see.

If you were the victim, you'd want someone to return your money/goods.

Yeah, man, he said that in the OP. I suppose it would be a good idea to turn in as opposed to just leaving it. You should get some good shots and a written statement from the 5-0 saying you found it and returned it or whatever and do a shadowbox frame with the pics and statement in it. That's be a cool story to tell!

Orrrr say "ef that" and just use nab it all for what it's worth since you left it for the owner in good form.

(only partially joking)

You never know how they may benefit. The dude could have slaughtered someone and the only extant evidence may lie in that bag.
Also, dyed bucks = bank robbery, almost exclusively. Dye packs ain't cheap.

In this case the stolen money doesn't have any value since it's all dyed out, but that sounds right nonetheless. I'm going to give that to the police tomorrow.

Very interesting story. And just to make it creepier, think about what would've happened if you ran into the thief down there.

I'll be watching this thread with interest for updates from you.

I'm sure he would have acted like a normal homeless guy if he saw me (judging from what I found in his bag, he was indeed homeless), and I probably wouldn't have guessed he was a thief.

I'd inspect every fucking bill for that dye and make sure some couldn't be used. If it was dye=packed, it was insured and I would have no qualms using some of the cleaner ones at an ethnic dive-bar or a minority-run bodega in the city.

Glad to hear it.

The money would be insured so even if, as Ed suggests, a few bills make their way into your pocket I'm sure the police would appreciate the rest of the items. Perhaps there were more robberies to be connected to the items.

Indeed, fuck the bank. Insurance aside, they make the shit appear from thin air anyway - no loss.
I'd wager a change machine at a car wash probably wouldn't care about that dye. Of course, no incitement towards any such criminal activity is intended by that remark.
I'm no lawyerman, no lawerman's son, but I'd say that's money laundering till the lawyerman come.

Not sure about car wash, but machine wash would definitely be money laundering...

Po-Lice would probably have more questions about you being in the drain and how you came across this.

Yes that was one of my fears, but I hope they can make the difference between trespassing in an empty drain and robbing $1300 from a bank. And if they want to fine me, they can just take from the cash I found.

I went to the police station yesterday and gave them the money and credit cards of the suspect. They didn't have any officer available at this time, so they didn't bother asking me questions. They will probably call me back soon if they want to do something about it.

The police department finally called me today to ask me a few questions. They wanted to know the exact location of stash, so I gave it to them. Of course they wondered what I was doing inside a storm drain, I answered that I like to explore it and take pictures, and it didn't make them suspicious. The police officer seemed a little excited to the idea that he will have to explore it too!

I don't think there will be a reward, but they thanked me for bringing this. That's right police department, UE is here to help

Man. They didn't make you a Jr. Deputy or nothing? I'd demand a PAL sticker at the least.

There is one more chapter to the story. The police detective called me the next day, saying he went inside the drain but didn't find the bags, so he wanted me to come over to show him the exact location. So we got inside the storm drain with his SUV and found the bags a little further than where he searched before.
He new damn well that I was trespassing in the first place, but since he is a nice guy he rewarded me with more exploration tips in the area

That is so cool. You have like a bond with the police now. I feel like if ever you are caught exploring in the jurisdiction of this department, they will turn the other cheek.
