What is the point of boarding up EVERY window? < on 7/15/2014 7:00 PM > | Reply with Quote
I was looking at some old photos and it reminded me of something that I never could figure out.
I see/saw this mainly in Massachusetts, but why to people board up EVERY window of someplace abandoned? Even windows that are very high up or too small for a human to fit through (i.e. Worcester or Danvers admin. towers)!
I just never made much sense to me...

Many abandoned structures that have boarded windows don't have any glass behind the plywood. It's likely done to prevent liability in case someone does get inside and falls out.

I think it's mainly to avoid water damage and keep birds and other small animals out. Usually when I see this, it's a building that's in good enough shape to be reused or renovated.

In massachusetts nothing was boarded up at first, just the first floor windows for obvious reasons, Then a friend of mine got a job as the security guard at Danvers state, at the time it was only one guard on duty so you could get away with murder, before the internet was popular, before UER's code of ethic, and wellafter a few beers took away common sense this guard would invite his friends up too basically run wild up there with no repercussion of getting in trouble, one of our friends was a super destructive dude, and would just break and break and break, in one weekend they literally broke out most of the windows in the admin section of the kirkbride, after a few months of this, this friend who was a guard got transfered to metro state in waltham, and they did the same thing there, now most of the old school explorers from mass can vouch danvers and met " at the time " were the only 2 hospitals boarded up from top to bottom, and a hand full of people including an on duty guard are the reason. once Ken Tilden the director of DCAM ( the office that had jurisdiction over all massachusetts surplus property ) saw the effectiveness of sealing the buildings like this, in 2004 he did this to all the buildings with vandal issues
now I cant vouch for other states, or private properties in my state, but I knew ken tilden and straight from the horses mouth , this is why at least the mass state properties got the seal up
the on duty security guard is actually the guy holding the camera in this video from 2001 and the person who proudly edited this little movie, so it gives you kinda of an insight at to why places like danvers got sealed up
also before the " what an asshole, kill that kid " stuff starts popping up, yes we are all aware this is an asshole thing to do, and 99.9 % of this community frowns on this, and would never do this, but remember, like im always saying about vandalism, " at the time " these are local towns kids, most with no internet, most didnt know any place other than danvers exsisted, and there was no term called urban exploration.... not making excuses , just putting the " time frame and mindset " of this into perspective

Considering he couldn't trust the security that had been hired, I'd say so.

Just because you cant get to the high windows, doesnt mean others cant...

Posted by 2Xplorations Believe it or not some jurisdictions require it. At least they require an empty property to be secured, ie closed up.
In some towns the Man will do it for ya then send you the bill. Fire hazard and so forth..
Such is the case here in Denver. Landowners here are also required to remove all interior doors on their derelict properties (prevents backdrafts). Turned out to be a great help to the FD, but it was a huge bummer for this particular squatter (RIP). He made it to the (boarded) front door before succumbing to smoke inhalation:

As could be assumed, the homicide detectives were none too keen on letting me have a look around inside the next day. Nice guys, though.
