I'm sure everyone's been asked where a location is before, but what are your best comebacks when this question arises?

Detroit. Everything abandoned is in Detroit.

The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark.

I don't give guests a hard time about spots usually but I do normally tell other locals to fuck off or just say "It's in Detroit" and leave it at that.

Normally whenever somebody I know asks me I tell them "unless you are coming exploring with me, you aren't knowing any of my spots."

I had to address this on my offroad Jeep website. This hobby parallels so much with offroading and caving so I'll just copy and paste the stickied answer:

"So you're a J'n00b. We all were once.
Based off our own experience we'll share with you that there's some questions you're not going to want to pop off right away.

"Where's that trail at?" would be one of the big ones.

As silly as it sounds, not everyone likes offroading. Some people think you should not be able to go further than your Prius can take you. Closing things off is their method of thought, because if they can't enjoy it, no one should. This however becomes less and less silly of a scenario when you've seen trail damage and trashed desert/forest first hand. Unfortunately it only takes a small minority of trespassing and inconsiderate wheelers to shine a light on all the rest of us and shine it with their solar powered flashlights they will. Arizona is not immune to trail closures. This past year we've seen losses in our most popular spots in Table Mesa and Florence Junction. Trails get damaged, get closed, and the next thing you know there's change missing from your dresser and your daughter's knocked up. I've seen it a hundred times.

In short, we're forced to be stronger stewards of our privileged hobby, pulling the weeds ourselves and checking the guest list twice. There are people who just plain don't belong on some trails whether their equipment doesn't clear for the type of obstacles featured or their experience doesn't match up. It could even be as blunt as "I don't know you bro, hang around a little longer, or ask about upcoming runs instead." We'll try not slap you too bad with a here's your sign comeback, but you gotta remember these trails are ours to protect."

1. "Oh, it's been demolished"
2. "I'm only exchange location information for sexual favors"
3. (only if they just seem really cool) "I can't tell you but I'll show you".

I don't know I'm pretty liberal about locations, as in I don't consider anything top secret or "my location". I just take things on case by case basis, so I don't have any standard comebacks because a lot of times if I like you I'll tell you the location. I can read people pretty well so I just take it as it comes.

That being said I did fuck up once on her a long time ago. Back when Weston State Hospital was abandoned I had a girl ask me about how to get in. I thought she seem honest and nice and I gave her a lot of good advice on exactly how to get in. Found out the next week she got busted by security trying to break a window to get in (I had gave her an easy entry point)with TEN other people!

I was told "haha, you need to know the right people" after asking an acquaintance how to access the Paris catacombs. It was a pretty lame comeback for two reasons:

- He started the conversation by saying "Oh I saw your facebook photos, you are interested in bunkers? You should check out this place too, I have been there myself, there are WWII german and french bunkers, parties, amazing things and stuff." So my obvious reply was to ask him how to get there, he knew I was going to ask that.
- I ended up going there without knowing the "right people". He just wanted to sound like an elite member of some sort.

For this reason, I didn't hesitate to give some hints to other friends who wanted to go there, instead of acting like this guy. I think UE is not about knowing the "right people".

No comeback is necessary.

People that you don't know will generally understand the reason behind your decision, and if you have to phrase it as a comeback then generally you'll just piss people off. A simple, "I sorry but I can't share it with you" will suffice.
