Is it safer (in terms of falling, and in terms of running into people) to go up cranes after sunset or before sunrise?
After sunset, it's dark, so visibility may be affected (even with a flashlight, it can sometimes be hard to tell when it's safe). In the morning, it's bright, so everyone can see you.

I do most of my exploring in broad daylight. Even if people see you they usually assume you have business to conduct or a reason to be there. Helps if you wear a bright green shirt, as those are apparently the golden standard for construction companies.

My advice is study the working rhythms round the site to find the quietest time. Combine with the time of day/night when you have sufficient light to capture the kind of stills/video you want. If you're just climbing crane ladders and parking on the platforms, there's hardly any unsafe time of day/night to do so. Once I climbed one in a fully blown storm, but that was because it was in an active secure port area and the storm would likely keep security guards indoors. Choose a bright enough night/time of night to avoid using a flashlight. Flashlights up cranes at night are too visible and suspicious-looking, imo.
Here's the storm video, btw. Have fun up there!
