What Gear to Bring?

I'm fresh to the site and to the concept of UE. I got interested while watching a show about abandoned cities. Back to the point, I was wondering what gear most people bring when they go out too see these buildings. I figure almost everyone has a camera and a flash light but what else? What do you normally wear?

^^ perfect ^^

While I myself am new to the site, I have been exploring abandonments for quite some time. I find that long pants, and if it's not too hot, sleeves as well, are a good idea, because I tend to get really itchy from walking/crawling around dusty asbestos filled buildings. Also respirators are usually a must depending on the location. Also depending on the time and visibility dress accordingly. Walking into a building by the street in day? Dress casually. You don't want to look like a criminal. Walking around a factory complex or chains of rooftops at night? might wanna dress in dark clothing so you aren't spotted.

But in general just bring a good attitude and confidence. Have fun and welcome to UER!

If I am going draining, I wear a dress and riding boots. Or nothing.

If I am going to an abandonment, I wear jeans and a shirt. Or nothing.

Invest in a decent pair of shoes, I prefer running shoes for movement/comfort, but if you're going to check out construction sites, derelicts, old factories, etc, then get a good pair of steel-toed work boots.

There is nothing worse than stepping on a rusty nail.

I also bring a good pair of fingerless gloves so I don't ruin my palms hoping over fences and the like...But that's just me.

Extra batteries for your flashlight never hurts and a trust-worthy friend is an asset no gear will ever replace.

In the meantime, welcome to UER and safe travels!

I usually bring a flashlight, camera, my rescue knife, and occasionally a respirator.

I have a sturdy pair of Carhartt work pants, I believe they are made with canvas or something. They have a double layer of fabric on the knees and upper thighs that offers good leg protection, and are available in a few different colors, including dark ones. A few times, I have crawled over rough and jagged stuff and been thankful for them. The only real drawback is that they are a little heavy, so they might contribute to your fatigue after a few hours of exploring or so. For me, they are a must-have.

If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire... Tunnelrunner33!

You dont need a bunny suit to go exploring. Depending on the location a wolf or lion might be a more tactical decision.

Well think about it this way. What would a security guard do if he saw a 6ft rabbit hopping around an abandoned factory? Probably just turn away and promise himself never to drink again.

I'm a long-time explorer, new member. My general uniform for exploring has been:

- Good solid shoes that cover the foot entirely: workboots are a good choice, but I personally prefer converse 'cause they've got a thick sole but they're otherwise lightweight and help with stealth (I am very, very small).

- Thick, dark trousers: denim is the obvious choice but linen and canvas are equally serviceable. Yoga pants or tights might allow more freedom of movement but won't protect you from the environment you're in.

- A light-weight tank or tee, in a dark colour. For my fellow ladies, a supportive bra 'cause shit can get athletic.

- A fitted hoodie in a dark colour that zips up the front. Personally I prefer fitted 'cause it helps me keep a more accurate awareness of my size in space (I always imagine myself as larger than I am - again, I am *very* small), and the zipper up the front allows me to cool down quickly, as needed.

- Gloves: you can never go wrong with gloves, even if all you've got is a pair of winter driving leathers. These will save your hands from getting torn up.

- A flashlight, and try to get coloured lenses for it. A blue lense on a flashlight will allow you to use it with more subtlety in riskier situations.

- Camera: I only ever carry a compact (mine is a trusty fuji X20) - no lenses to worry on, thus no extra bulk.

- A utility knife. I've used this to dig glass out of my knees, poke stuff, get out of tight spots, and fix my camera (to name a few things).

- a scarf: can be used as a dust protector, something to keep you warm, a pillow to roll & rest your head for a bit, etc. I carry a scarf everywhere, and exploring is no exception.

- Extra batteries, and backup for your extras. 'cause everything dies *right* when you don't want it to.

Try and pack as light but as sensible as possible.

Camera, torch, spare batteries, water, food, decent shoes, gimp mask.

Spray paint, heroin, gasoline, and matches. And make sure to let the police know where you will be, because they like to go exploring too and you wouldn't want them to feel left out.

I always wear jeans, a comfortable pair of work boots and a medium to dark colored shirt, brown should be the best to help you blend in. I always carry a backpack with camera, flashlight (or two), extra batteries, water, cigs and a dust mask. A small pair of binoculars, gloves and a multi purpose tool or utility knife can be useful to.
