It was pretty cool (no sound, btw), but the lack of bloated carcasses and no underwater tour of the bar left me wanting more.

Cool video.

I actually just got off a cruise yesterday. I heard they are going to attempt to raise it out of the water within the next few weeks.

I'm surprised to see the self-inflating life rafts still in place. Shouldn't they automatically release upon immersion?

There's usually an arming pin or other safety mechanism that has to be pulled. It's disarmed to keep the raft from accidentally deploying during installation, shipping, etc. Whether they're kept armed or disarmed on the ship depends on the country's safety regulations, company policy, crew training, etc. I noticed in the South Korea ferry sinking that most of the automatic life rafts also failed to deploy. Some of them have a two-stage mechanism, one part releases the raft canister from its mount, and the other activates the compressed gas to inflate. Sometimes the arming mechanisms are different, or can be configured to only inflate a certain way (often via a tug on a line vs water immersion, to keep the raft from inflating on deck in heavy waves).

The local equivalent of the Coast Guard theoretically inspects safety devices to ensure they're installed properly, up to date, etc, but often the vessel crews don't know how the equipment works and the official inspections are cursory or skipped. Some articles on the Korean sinking mention that they got around to inspecting other ferries afterwards and found there were many faulty life rafts. http://www.ibtimes...rly-sewols-1576199

Neat video! Few things cooler than wreck diving for those of us who like the whole industrial decay environment. "Flying" through the wreck has its own surreal feel as well.

It's nice that it sits upright. Ships sitting at angles have a very disorientating effect. Our brains want things upright so we often try to swim at the same angle as the ship sits. Funny really.

So, they're starting the floating operation on Monday. I wonder if they're going to publish photos from the previously flooded interiors once the ship is at the scrapyard...

Seeing this shit makes me wish I could dive. My partner is an avid diver, and it pains me that the best I'll ever be able to do is watch while floating on the surface.

(my left eardrum ruptured, it's a problem for diving)

Genoa, Italy.

Already saw some photographs from inside the vessel. Also, saw a picture of a guy cleaning the murk away with a pressure washer. Here, have a job with a purpose...

I wonder why they would even bother paying someone to clean the boat since it's going to be scrapped. Are they not scuttling the vessel?

Really? I've ruptured my ear a couple of times (including during an ascent from a dive) and it's never been a problem.

Why would they? It's worth millions of dollars as scrap metal. Also, it's illegal to dump your garbage to the sea in the civilized world.

Unless you're a navy! Then you can sink stuff all you want!
http://www.marinei...ship-deliberately/

Or if it's inconvenient to scrap it, like the Japanese ships floating around the Pacific (for the one pictured, a private fishing boat did try to salvage it, but found nothing valuable on board).
http://www.adn.com...apanese-ghost-ship

Oh, and once you go beyond X miles from shore it's legal to dump all kinds of things. Until recently the limit for sewage in the US was 3 miles. Those mega cruise ships that take tourists to see pristine glaciers and wildlife have remarkably small holding tanks. When traversing the inside waters between islands, they would just find a "donut hole" 3 miles from any land and flush all their sewage at once...

I don't think the US counts as a civilized country when it comes to ocean dumping
