With the last days of being a minor rapidly diminishing, I did what any rational person would do: committed petty crimes (misdemeanor mayhem).

First up is a well known mental hospital. This place was founded in 1822 (through a $30,000 grant) and received its first patient in 1826, making it one of the oldest psychiatric hospitals in the United States. Although the population of the asylum was initially very small, the state assumed responsibility for the mentally ill in 1871. This led to jails releasing mentally ill prisoners to the hospital, and subsequently caused the number of patients to exceed the hospital's limit. Substandard treatment and living conditions ensued, by 1900 thirty percent of patients died every year (out of a population of about 1,200). The deplorable conditions in the hospital caused its superintendent to push for ways to educate the masses on mental health. As a result, many mental health clinics were opened, making psychiatric care more accessible. Much to the dismay of the hospital's owner at the time, the grounds were used as a confederate POW camp for union officers from 1864 to 1865. It also provided refuge to people after the city was burned down by General William T Sherman. I've read some stuff online that the place is slated for demolition, which is an absolute travesty given its historical significance.

Now for the cement plant... After discovering an active construction site fifty feet away, and almost getting run over by the largest dump truck I have ever seen, we decided to come back at night. Coming back at night meant walking 2 miles down a dirt road in the middle of a swamp, and that sucked. Then we had to spend 45 minutes finding a different POE to appease the climbing impaired, which also sucked. The place was partly active and all the stairs and ladders that led to the cool stuff had been removed (this sucked as well). There was a very large smokestack which afforded a (mostly) enjoyable climb. The pictures are bad but I haven't seen this place posted on here so I will share a few.

On the long trek back to the car, we almost got eaten by some large animal that was stalking us from the long grass beside the road, this probably sucked the most out of the whole experience.

I was pretty dismayed, but I awoke the next day to the knowledge that I could now vote and star in adult films. Silver linings, yay!

My sincerest apologies for any photography sins that I may commit, but you must understand that I have no idea what I'm doing.

Nice post. The pictures from the mental health facility are pretty rad. I would love to stumble across something like this to explore.

I like the barren starkness you've captured in #s 3, 5, & 9.
The stairs in #8 is a nice dizzy shot.

Places like the asylum at the top make me wish there were still places like this in Nova Scotia. We have to drive to NB or Maine for awesome-sauce locations like this....

Great shots!
