I know this was posted over half a year ago but I can tell you have the right idea for sure. I really like incorporating steel wool into my shoots but it's important you don't accidentally burn down where you are shooting! The image below was a little risky because one of the train cars has a rotting wooden roof; since I permission to the property and could drive back we brought in jugs of water and wet down the area before shooting the photo, I also like carrying a fire extinguisher just to be safe.
