Wow, that's one hell of an adventure. Good to know you made it out okay.
Now I just need to get myself a GoPro...

Go for it. Even though GoPros can be temperamental, there is still a lot to love about them. Meanwhile, looking back at the video, I was certainly guilty of being the 'retard' you mentioned. Any of a number of people could have seen me and reported me that night. Still, I wasn't able to go later in the evening, and so even though I would be more circumspect now, I'm still glad I had the adventure.

Walking around a abandoned textile mill. He came in the front entrance which didn't have a door. I started walking toward him, he toward me. I nodded and said howdy. He said hi. Kept walking past him to some of the abandoned equipment with a notepad in my hand. He said ya ain't smoking in here are ya? I said nope. He said ok, be careful. These places burn easy and don't go on the second floor, it's unstable as all get out. I said thanks and he walked out.

Happened about 7 years ago. Buildings owner was being looked for so he could pay to have it demoed. They never found him. Place is half torn down now. Victor Mills in Greer SC.

Gunner, where the hell did you find a street -that- dead? I couldn't get away with that anywhere near where I live.

New Zealand's quiet little capital city on a weeknight I don't often think now about how small our population is compared to our land mass - though I certainly did when returning from living in London and Vancouver.

My first experience with the cops while exploring was at an abandoned prison west of Detroit. The obese security guard saw the holes in the fences and parked his truck right on top of the last one into the yard so that we couldn't get out. The cops took about 35 minutes, meanwhile we were standing in between two close fences with razor wire on both sides.

Tickets and drove us back to the car. And gave me my tools back. Pretty cool cops actually. They seemed annoyed that the security guard actually called them instead of just telling us to get lost lol.

In the last 10 yrs Ive had many run ins with the law, almost all narrowly escaped on foot or bike, except one night when myself, 5 other dudes and a dog were having an impromtu party/graffiti sesh on a lowrise rooftop in the city. Unaware were we that the store below had people asleep inside - we truely woke them up and the 5-0 showed up, trapped us on the roof with no escape and off we went to lockup. They took it pretty serious. We all got different charges but I got a count of graffiti and trespass. One cock and bull story later and the judge throws the case out.

That was about 6-7 yrs ago and I clearly havent learnt - still fucking around on other peoples property. Since then Ive learnt not to be to worried about dealing with the cops. If they turn up I always make the quick decision to either hightail it, or try to reason with them. The latter works surprisingly well too often.

Recent example includes last month, just before leaving Australia, I held a big selloff sale of my artwork in a huge abandon in the centre of town. As expected the cops show up eventually. They didnt like I was welcoming the public to trespass into a fairly decrepit building, but certainly not a fan of me selling booze without a licence. Almost so much that they overlooked the trespass issue!
Smooth talked my way out of it as a celebration of "pop up art urban vibrancy buzzwords" etc and they let me off with a heavy warning. Cops always makes for great stories and mixing up the mundane adventures with a bit of excitement.

I've only had one run-in with the law and it didn't end well. I was climbing a building with some friends and the police showed up. I immediately decided to get the fuck out of there but it took my friends about 15 seconds longer and they got caught. The police had seen three of us so they asked my "friend" who I was and he gave them my phone number, address, full name, and told them where I go to school. They ended up putting an arrest warrant out for me and about a week after it happened, I was robbed at gunpoint. I called the police to report it and they ended up handcuffing me and giving me a ticket for trespassing.

I've had a couple of run-ins with the law over here, luckily not ended badly....yet!

My first was on a huge old air force base which was one of my 'local' sites, we had finished up in one of the barrack blocks and my mate looked out the window and said 'there's a police car driving around outside'. My other mate totally dismissed it as him seeing things but a few minutes later as we made our way out the car pulls up alongside us, couple of officers get out and ask us a few questions, search us for stolen property, we get given the search forms and that was that - as we were good boys we didn't have anything on us

Also hidden in a small room on the top floor of a hospital whilst two police officers and the security guard searched the place for me and my mate, they didn't find us!

Although the best was in France last July, rolled up to this massive derelict mill building at about 4.30am just as it was getting light, and about an hour in I spot three figures dressed in dark clothing walking across the no mans land towards the boundary fence...and not wanting to be stuck in a total deathtrap of a location with police looking for us we decide to head to ground level and see what's what. Outside the building we couldn't see much but suddenly three police officers round a corner of the building in front of us, quickly followed by three more, then two more appear from nowhere. As soon as they saw we had tripods and camera gear it was all laughs and smiles, and luckly for us one spoke very good English - and she just happened to be a total babe as well! We weren't even asked for ID or searched or anything, just told to leave - and when we got back to the car we found it boxed in by three police cars with a slightly disgruntled looking officer sat watching over it!

I got "trespassing after forbidden" but I've only had my arraignment so far so I really can't say. My lawyer says he's sure we can get it dismissed with community service but I'm still laying low for now

There were 4 of us leaving an abandoned flour mill in a prominent location of downtown with an amazing rooftop view. Two of us had crawled out a small crack in a busted door out into the alley. Me and my friend were still inside. Out of seemingly nowhere a group of about 6 cops came into the alley with flashlights. We were trapped. They didn't see us hiding on the first pass, but they came back again before we could all get back in the building and spotted us. Guns were drawn, dogs were threatened at us. They knew some of us were still inside, so we surrendered and crawled out the door crack at gun point. We all got cuffed and searched. All they found on us was camera shit and a huge bag of nuts in my friends sweatpants pocket. They separated and question us. We all had the same story. We told them the way we went in wasn't posted No Trespassing signs and we didn't force entry (which was true), so they knew there wasn't much they could do.

After that the tension eased. We just chatted with them for a bit. We found out one of the neighboring apartment building residents called us in while we were on the roof. They asked us if we were "those urban explorer guys" and warned us not to go in the university steam tunnels because they a wired to the teeth with cameras and they'd get to come find us if we went down there. We found out one of the cops was retiring that week and could care less about some dumb kids trespassing. We were awkwardly laughing with them by the end.

They ended up sending us on our way without ever actually warning us or telling us not to come back. On the way out one of the cops said something sassy over his car loudspeaker and pretended drive through a puddle next to us and drench us. And the dude that searched me never gave me back my $40 flashlight. douche.

Earlier today a friend and I were exploring a known abandon grain elevator towards the downtown area of the city we live in. On one side there were two bright yellow trailers that were clearly new, but we figured that since there were no cars we should be absolutely fine.

We parked far enough away that my car wasn't visible and made our way towards the property. We were right up against the silos and well past several "No Trespassing" signs when we heard a car coming up behind us. Heard is less relevant here because we saw it next to us at about the same time.

It wasn't actually law enforcement, but it was a big red pickup with a flashing light and a logo that matched the yellow trailers. I was ready to bolt, but my friend insisted we keep walking; against my better judgement I followed suit. The truck pulled up to one of the trailers, the guy got out, and went in. We walked past and about 5 minutes later we see the guy getting back in his truck and leaving. No words were exchanged, but apparently my friend did nod at him when he first noticed the car. I guess a nod is enough to get around a trespassing violation in some places?

My friend and I stuck around the place for around an hour and half afterwords moving things around and trying to reach a distant ladder (only to find out that it wasn't sturdy enough for either of us to risk it), and no one else came back. It was really weird; I kept expecting reinforcements or something.

You get caught by suburban or rural police: You are likely gonna get fucked.

You get caught by city police: You are probably gonna be okay.

Based on all these stories, mine seems insane.

I was exploring an abandoned factory in the city next to mine. This place has been blown the fuck up on social media and is hardly a secret. The first time I visited, there was a group of middle aged men (30s-40s) playing ball hockey in the parking lot.

Anyways, I go inside and explore a bit. I'm taking photos here and there and basically just walking around. The place is a dump and everything has been vandalized. I guess I had been talking or making some sort of noise because within 20 minutes of walking in, I see red and blue lights flashing on the wall and one of the doors on the far side opens. I didn't really process everything fast enough and before I knew it I heard a large dog barking.

I hear someone yell "Put your hands in the air and walk towards me slowly". I started walking towards the voice (the factory is pitch black and I was using my cellphone as a flashlight). I get maybe 30ft away from the cops and one of them goes "Don't even think of trying to run away, we won't hesitate to release the dog". This whole time there's a mind-numbingly loud barking noise echoing through the entire building.

I get up to the cops, they handcuff me and pat me down. My camera, cellphone and lip balm (Yeah, they took my lipbalm) were taken away. I was shoved into the back of a cop car and they spent another 15 minutes doing a thorough search of the building. This whole time I haven't been able to explain anything and no one has asked me any questions.

Finally one of the cops comes up to me asks me what I was doing, I explain myself and they go "Well you have to be lying. The real estate agent said he had sealed this place up tight and you had to have broken in. He is pressing charges against you for B&E." I'm pissed at this point because literally every door to this place is open. I'm hauled off to the police station and booked in. After 5 hours of interrogation (Okay, more like 30 mins of interrogation and 4.5 hours sitting alone in this 4x4 white room with a table and 2 stools screwed to the floor) they release me with no charges on account of "Not enough evidence".

TL;DR. Real Estate agent calls the cops, presses BS charges. 5 Hours of waiting in the police station just to be told they have to release me because there's not enough evidence to complete the charge. Didn't even get a trespassing ticket.

Wow. That's really lucky that you got away that easily. Why the hell would they steal your lip-balm? That's absolutely retarded.
The way the arrest went down, I was expecting that to go a lot worse.

I've had the Philly police give me my fat bag of weed back and tell me "throw this out when you get home, I don't want to litter" and wink at me. True story after getting busted in Nicetown visiting the Freihofer's Bakery. They saw I didn't have tools or spraypaint, gloves or a backpack and let me go.
