| | | I personally use Google-Earth. Like Filthcity, I have been working on what started as a sort of "ultimate UE road-trip map/guide" for about 7-8 years now. It was a collaborative effort between two others and myself for the first 5 years. We spent a good deal of time coordinating our efforts, and created a "map-guidelines" PDF-file, complete with a "Placemark key" which assigned certain placemarks and colors, depending on the location type, status, etc.... As far as updating the project, we had a simple, but effective system. Every time I or someone else would make a change, we would save it to a temp KMZ file and then exchange the updates back and forth, adding each update to a base-map KMZ which we all would work off of, periodically moving the temp files we were working on to the base KMZ map, thus, creating a new "version". After a while, we got lazy and stopped swapping G.E updates completely. However, I started working on it again recently. I have heard rumors from other explorers/map-nerds that there is a way to create a server which several people can work on, and automatically updates the shared KMZ base-map in real time.

| | | I use http://www.grafetee.com/, which works a lot better for me than Google Maps. The service used to cost money, but it is now free. You can add locations anywhere, with a name, image, and description. Custom map markers can be uploaded as well for categorizing types of locations. The software uses the Google Maps API, so everything is very familiar and easy to use. Only those with the map URL can access it, and a password can be set as well for extra security. It's also very portable, and can be hooked into the Grafetee mobile app ( for both iOS and Android ) that uses your phone's GPS to get directions for locations. You can also enable functionality so that those with access can add their locations. I have about 75 locations on my current shared map. I don't believe there is KMZ support though, unfortunately. So you won't be able to import current maps. The support staff is very friendly though, and helped me with any past issue quickly and efficiently. NOTE: For whatever reason, Satellite view isn't enabled by default. You'll have to add this code to a box in the "Settings" tab, with the title of "Your custom JavaScript code for page resize": map.setOptions({ mapTypeControl:true, mapTypeControlOptions: { position: google.maps.ControlPosition.BOTTOM_CENTER, style: google.maps.MapTypeControlStyle.DROPDOWN_MENU } }); |
