DB maps: what do you use?

Hello!

I've recently been frustrated with not having one good map i can have coordinates saved to and pinpointed on that also sync to my phone.

Ever since i've been exploring i've just used Google earth to save pinpoints of locations to explore, but when i add new ones they don't update to the mobile app.

Me and my friends have made a googlemaps account we all share and contribute to, but it's really hard to use and inconvenient. and i cant import my KML's that are saved in my google earth map.

So the question here, is there any good third party map apps/programs that you recommend for your Personal UEDB?

I haven't found any other good applications but I have been using Google maps for my own compilation.

I have been compiling spots around the Baltimore area, with a spot or two also marked in PA and NJ.

If anyone is interested in seeing or adding to this map, please let me know.

We could even potentially turn it into a resource for this site, with spots all over the country, detailed with instructions on how to enter each location and descriptions of what can be found!

The one I use is Google Maps Engine Lite

This can be added to any android device, and all your maps created on your pc can be accessed anywhere. You can have multiple maps and switch between them. Share them and teh like. Essentially it takes the old parts of Google Maps that noone except us lot used.... and created a better standalone app for them.

I just use google maps. Anytime I come across something interesting I click the exact spot and hit save. My map is filled with little stars all over the Northeast. It's really easy to 'unsave' them too. Plus, then I can get directions to anywhere by just clicking the star!

I have my computer logged in and linked up to the app on my phone, so if I change stuff on either it updates the other instantly. It works beautifully so I don't really need to use anything else. Just simple.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that's a horrible idea. Sensitive info would get into the hands of people with bad intentions.

Also, here's the thread from 3 months ago the last time this was brought up- www.uer.ca/forum_s...rrpage=1&pp#post11

I've always used Google Earth, but my personal database is so large that it can get really sluggish.

Nothing out there has 100% fit what I was looking for, so I actually started writing my own mapping app about a month back. Basically it is http://backcountrynavigator.com/ with the ability for users to manage collections of locations. If I can be bothered and there's interest, I may package it as a released app eventually.

I use Maps.app (Mac) along with my iPhone to store my personal locations. Bookmarks are synced automatically and I can even send directions to myself from my computer. If you're an Apple person this is definitely the way to go!

I personally use Google-Earth. Like Filthcity, I have been working on what started as a sort of "ultimate UE road-trip map/guide" for about 7-8 years now. It was a collaborative effort between two others and myself for the first 5 years. We spent a good deal of time coordinating our efforts, and created a "map-guidelines" PDF-file, complete with a "Placemark key" which assigned certain placemarks and colors, depending on the location type, status, etc.... As far as updating the project, we had a simple, but effective system. Every time I or someone else would make a change, we would save it to a temp KMZ file and then exchange the updates back and forth, adding each update to a base-map KMZ which we all would work off of, periodically moving the temp files we were working on to the base KMZ map, thus,
creating a new "version".

After a while, we got lazy and stopped swapping G.E updates completely. However, I started working on it again recently.

I have heard rumors from other explorers/map-nerds that there is a way to create a server which several people can work on, and automatically updates the shared KMZ base-map in real time.

I use http://www.grafetee.com/, which works a lot better for me than Google Maps. The service used to cost money, but it is now free.

You can add locations anywhere, with a name, image, and description. Custom map markers can be uploaded as well for categorizing types of locations. The software uses the Google Maps API, so everything is very familiar and easy to use. Only those with the map URL can access it, and a password can be set as well for extra security.

It's also very portable, and can be hooked into the Grafetee mobile app ( for both iOS and Android ) that uses your phone's GPS to get directions for locations. You can also enable functionality so that those with access can add their locations.

I have about 75 locations on my current shared map. I don't believe there is KMZ support though, unfortunately. So you won't be able to import current maps. The support staff is very friendly though, and helped me with any past issue quickly and efficiently.

NOTE: For whatever reason, Satellite view isn't enabled by default. You'll have to add this code to a box in the "Settings" tab, with the title of "Your custom JavaScript code for page resize":

map.setOptions({
mapTypeControl:true,
mapTypeControlOptions: {
position: google.maps.ControlPosition.BOTTOM_CENTER,
style: google.maps.MapTypeControlStyle.DROPDOWN_MENU
}
});

I know you are new here, but you do realize that that's the very reason no one updates the DB here, right? Bad idea.

No, it's the built-in Maps app. Free! I'm on Mavericks, don't know how far back it goes. Anyway yes if you use iCloud on both devices bookmarks are synced automatically between the two!
