Fire escapes on old buildings are a hoot. Good place to start too. I do that often here. I like the act of climbing ladders though. Cranes are similar though. Just do it.

I agree with Puddlejumper. I am just beginning to do rooftops myself, and so far my main method has been simply to jump and catch the bottom rungs of fire escapes. Here in Seattle, the city inspects fire escapes, and many of them will have cards hanging on them that document their last inspections, which helps to ease my fears about them collapsing beneath my feet. So far there have been no problems or incidents.
