Today I went out for an explore/photo day at one of my favorite local drains. Ive been here several other times and taken some neat pictures, but this time I took the big camera for some longer exposure stuff. Rather new to this camera, so I couldn't quite get the ISO adjusted how I wanted it or turn off the flash in the last few pictures, also had trouble focusing, but still pretty cool for a first attempt.

This drain was started in the early 80s; thats the corrugated part I've always stopped at, mainly because I haven't gone with good boots yet as its really slippery. The rest of it was made a bit later and is a 7 foot pipe. About 1 cubit ft/second year round unless its raining. These were all taken with Nikon D5100. I'll make a separate post for my iPhone 4s pictures.

When there is tranquility, you are in the right place. When there are no footprints, you are on the right path. When there are no tire tracks, you are on the right road.

Very nice! The drains in OC are fun to explore, you find some weird graffiti depending on how far you go.

Number 10 is a good photo - I'd have cropped it tighter personally, but not bad nonetheless.

As far as focusing goes, were you trying to manual or auto focus? If you were autofocusing, the camera needs a decent amount of light for that - it really helps to have a decently bright flashlight on whatever it is your focus point is on, to assist the camera as much as possible. Best thing after that if you're on a tripod is to switch back to manual focus after you've got it focused which will lock it in place so you can take as many photos as you want without having to re-focus each time. Then just play around with your exposure time and light painting. Also if you're on a tripod, get your ISO as low as it will go, as you can just increase your exposure time and it doesn't matter as you've got a stable platform to shoot from.

Can I possibly use the word 'focus' any more in this comment. Apparently, yes.

Focus.

Yeah I just got started on this camera and haven't quite figured it all out yet, but it was on autofocus and couldn't figure out how to get it off in the dark. So low ISO and long exposure. I'll try that next time thanks!
